Blog: Just how important is Lazarous Kambole

Lazarous Kambole scored the winning penalty for Zambia on Wednesday to set up a crunchy encounter against South Africa in the final of the four team tournament after coming on as a substitute to score a last gasp equaliser and force the match to penalties.

This comes barely four days after he scored the winning goal in Ivory coast to send Zesco United to the group stages of the CAF champions league.

For a player who was just a fringe to player in the United squad just two years ago, Kambole is proving to be rather very important player for both club and country.

NATIONAL TEAM

After an impressive 2017 campaign with Zesco United Kambole caught the eye of coach Wedson Nyirenda and was handed his first national team call up and made the final squad for the 2018 CHAN tournament.

Coach Wedson Nyirenda named him in the starting line-up of the

Kambole was named man of the match of his national team debut at the CHAN tournament in Morocco

opening agame against Uganda and he did not disappoint scoring one goal setting up another for Augustine Mulenga as Zambia beat the East Africans by three goals to one.

His performance on the day did not just earn him the man of the match accolade but also praise from the coach.

There is nothing that gives coach a lot of pleasure than when you believe in a player and he responds in that style. The boy is starting to believe in himself, getting more and more confident. I think the young man has a lot to show

Kambole ended the tournament with two goals and two asissts, a very impressive return for a debutant who came in second both on assists and goals for Zambia at the tournament.

Fast forward to 21st March at the four team tournament, he has already made his mark despite only playing a few minutes, A mark of a good player.

CLUB

At Zesco United he started the season like a house on fire scoring three goals in the first three games to shoot to the top of the top goal scorers chart.

Whatever happened on the way, The player who seemed like a contender for the golden boot just stopped scoring. Like every other good player the bad patch did not last forever as he gained his groove back and at the most crucial part of the season.

He went on a four game scoring Bonanza netting five times to help Zesco United on the road to their sixth league title. Kambole ended the season with ten goals one of which came on the final day of the league as Zesco United beat Mighty Mufulira Wanderers by four goals to two to win the Super League. He also set up both of Jesse Jackson Were’s goals on the day.

He might not yet be Christopher Katongo, Collins Mbesuma or a Godfrey Ucar Chitalu but he has become a vital part of the Zesco United and Zambia national team set-up. A player of his calibre can only improve thats if he keeps on working hard and maintains a high level of discipline.

  1. Fashion Sakala must stop the childishness of putting personal glory first. Yesterday i saw him waste 4 chances were he decided to shoot instead of passing the ball to a teammate in a clear position to score. in yesterdays game there was no coordination, it was just running. Wada should not have substituted Mulenga Augustine whose work rate is very high. The players who were supposed to be substituted are Mwepu who was visibly very tired in the second half and wasteful Sakala. Shamujompa that defender is good but he is slow and soft on the ball. Wada please can you improve the balance in the team in the next game (proper coordinated passing game).

  2. Shonga dont score at Orlando but plays in every game reason being that he is not selfish team first so fashion take a leaf from that
