Asanovic set to name squad for three Nation Invitational tournament

Zambia national team head coach Aljosa Asanovic will next week name his squad for the Invitational tournament in Libya during the September FIFA window, the ZamFoot Crew understands.

Asanovic will be using the window to keep the Bullets busy and active ahead of the Ivory Coast 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

The September FIFA window has been left vacant by the CAF EXCO’s decision to move the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 qualifiers to March 2023.

CAF moved the September round of qualification matches for the Ivory Coast 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to March next year to give room to the five representatives at the 2022 Qatar World Cup ample time to prepare. Additionally, the tournament will now be played in January 2024.

Asanovic is expected to name a blend of local talent and players based abroad who are looking for a chance to break into the Chipolopolo Boys squad.

Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba, Dominic Chanda, Benedict Chepeshi, Kelvin Kapumbu, Ricky Banda Joshua Mutale, Golden Mashata and Patrick Gondwe are among the players that are expected to make the squad.

Asanovic could also hand a few youngsters a chance to state their case as he has previously handed young players call ups to train with the senior team.

Zambia will play hosts Libya on September 21 before engaging the Eagles of Mali three days later. The matches will be played at the Martyrs of February Stadium.
