Airport Warriors Football club was formed in 2004 and at a time it was playing in the lower ranks of the Lusaka football system.
In 2005 the team played in the Lusaka amateur league for 7 years after which it was promoted to FAZ division three in 2012 where it spent a season before moving high in the ranks to division two. After 6 years of fighting for qualification to provincial division one, the battle was won in 2019.
It is a team-based in Lusaka with the home ground being Chakunkula school ground. It is sponsored by the police service of the airport division hence the name Airport Warriors.
Despite the team playing its second season in the division, it has set an ambitious target of playing in the national league a second-tier FAZ league next season as they lie second on the log, one point behind league table-toppers Msisi Academy.
The ZamFoot Crew caught up with the team coach Kenneth Zulu to discuss the team’s prospects.
Kenneth Zulu says the team is receiving massive support from the police service and Ck Legends a thing that is motivation enough. He said the team will work to its strength to impress the sponsors.
“Last season was our first in division one, we said we finish in the top 8 a thing which we managed to achieve, this season we are going for a top cause we want to play national league next season,” Kenneth Zulu told the ZamFoot Crew in an exclusive interview.
The quest for national league qualification hit a snag last week after the team recorded their first loss of the season away to Sable Bulls a result which has not derailed the teams’ plans and the coach has said he has learned from that loss and that the team will pick up pieces and post a positive result when they host Para-Military at Chankukula ground this afternoon.
“In the game against Sable Bulls we played their game of using high balls and whenever they had set-pieces we lost focus as both goals they scored us came from corner kicks,in the second half we played our game but unfortunately they closed up spaces and parked the bus,” he said.
“As we host para-military we are aiming for one thing which is to win the match so that we get back our number one position,” he added.
The fight for the top spot in Lusaka provincial division one is hitting up with top five teams only separated by a point and two. Seven games have been played with twenty-seven yet to be played but despite it being in the early stages, pacers have already started setting the trend for national league qualification.
Msisi Academy has kept a record seven clean-sheets with Chainda Bombers coming in with a free-scoring tag as they have scored seventeen past opponents while Airport Warriors are joined with Msisi Academy as the team with the most wins as they have four apiece.
