Kalaba goal not enough as Mazembe go down in Ghana

Chipolopolo captain Rainford Kalaba scored a goal for CAF Confederations Cup group A leaders TP Mazembe but it was not enough to help them avoid picking their first defeat in the group stage after they went down 3 – 2 to Madeama of Ghana.

It was a dramatic match that saw Mazembe overcome a two goal deficit to to level 2 – 2 before conceding in the 5th and final minute of injury time.

Mazembe started with Kalaba and Nathan Sinkala in the first XI while Jonas Sakuwaha and Kabaso Chongo only made the substitute bench.

Mazembe went down in the 32nd minute after the goalkeeper made a howler after he went for an unorthodox save from a freekick that saw him dive forward with the ball creeping in under his body.

Mazembe then conceded a penalty in the 58th minute which was tucked home but they got themselves back in the game with a 60th minute equalizer.

Kalaba who seemed to have a quiet second half showed some very good movement when he popped up at the back post to head home in the 71st minute.

With the game headed for a draw, Madeama where gifted a goal when the referee failed to spot an offside for Donsu to pounce on to a ball which he controlled well to beat the keeper and score with virtually the last kick of the game.

Sinkala was solid in midfield though he only lasted 70 minutes.

Mazembe have already secured a place in the semi final of the competition having amassed 10 points, while Madeama moved into second position on 8 points with one more round of games to play.

In the same group on Saturday, Obrey Chirwa played the entire match for Young Africans when they picked their first win (1 – 0) over MO Bejaia of Algeria.

Chirwa, 22 had several chances in the game but his final touch let him down.

Young Africans have 4 points while Bejaia have 5 points.
