Nine-time MTN Super League champions ZESCO United have formally cautioned their technical bench following a string of disappointing results that have left the Ndola-based side in unfamiliar territory.
In a statement released on Monday, club management confirmed that it has initiated a review process of the technical bench amid concerns over the team’s recent performances.
“As Management, we have observed the poor performance of the team and hereby wish to inform all stakeholders, fans and the general public that we are currently in the process of reviewing the technical bench,” the statement read.
“Technical bench has since been cautioned and are aware of what is at stake.”
The development comes on the back of a heavy 3-1 defeat away to Red Arrows in Lusaka on Sunday — a result that stretched ZESCO’s losing run to three consecutive matches in the MTN Super League.
Season Unravelling
What began as a campaign filled with promise has steadily unravelled for the nine-time champions. Their struggles have not been limited to domestic competition. Last month, ZESCO bowed out of the CAF Confederation Cup after finishing bottom of Group D with just three points — a performance that further amplified concerns among supporters.
In the league, the former champions currently sit 11th on the table with 25 points, just four points above the relegation zone — a scenario few would have predicted at the start of the season.
Management acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stressing that the club’s standards demand more.
“We believe that the club could be in a better position than it is currently in,” the statement continued.
“We are not graded on intention, but judged by results, consistency, professionalism, discipline, and how well we represent the ZESCO United badge.”
Pressure Mounts on Siwale
Head coach Emmanuel Siwale and his backroom staff now face mounting pressure to steady the ship as the business end of the season approaches.
ZESCO’s immediate task will not be any easier, with crucial fixtures lined up against Green Buffaloes ,FC MUZA and Kansanshi Dynamos. The trio of matches could prove decisive in shaping both the club’s league standing and the future of the current technical setup.
Despite the turbulence, management has called for calm among supporters, assuring fans that decisive steps will soon be communicated.
“Our fans will soon be informed on the necessary steps management is taking to salvage the situation. We therefore appeal to you to remain calm as we work towards addressing the situation.”
For a club accustomed to challenging for titles, this is uncharted waters. The coming weeks will determine whether ZESCO can rediscover the resilience that once made them a dominant force in Zambian football — or whether deeper changes lie ahead in Ndola.
