The ZPL Women’s Super League came to a close yesterday with ZESCO Ndola Girls successfully defending their title, congratulations Zegalicious Girls.
A day for celebration for the girls ended with disappointment, confusion and feelings of disbelief.
After all the hard work put in, the Zambian Premier League did not show up to crown them as Champions, no trophy, no medals.
What’s making this even more confusing and disappointing is that a season is 34 games long, eight months or so long for them to plan and execute.
ZESCO Ndola Girls definitely deserves better ba ZPL and Football House.
If that’s not enough, now the league will move to 20 teams, but how ? And why, when we can’t crown Champions, can’t buy a simple trophy or medals for them.
The league has no sponsor, and the only support they got from ZPL is K50,000 the whole season, which is not even enough for a trip to Kalumbila for some teams.
For context, a trip to Kalumbila costs an average of K60,500 calculated based on the lowest and highest amount spent by teams spoken to by this author.
So now you are going to add 4 more games, and increase expenditure for teams in a league with no sponsor and no bailout from the league body ?
I wonder why we reason like we do with our football. That’s why the ZPL Women’s National team North Zone finished with walkovers on the final day and no team bothered to travel.
A home game costs on average around K15,000.
From whatever angle you look at it nothing is adding up but we are a country who love doing what is easy instead of doing what is right or and what needs to be done.
You could not give ZESCO Ndola Girls medals and trophy but you want them to play four more games next season, and what’s the motivation?
