Zanaco whitewash Nkwazi to go top

Zanaco have gone to the top of the MTN FAZ Super League standings for the first time in the current season after they defeated city rivals Nkwazi 3-0 at Sunset Stadium on Saturday.

Second half goals from Fashion Sakala, Saith Sakala and Ziyo Tembo helped to propel the bankers to the top with 28 points, albeit on goal difference from Nkana who drop into second position twenty four hours before they play their bogey team Zesco United on Sunday.

League standings after Week 15 matches played on Saturday show that Zanaco and Nkana are evenly matched, both teams having played 13 matches, winning 8 and drawing 4 apiece. Both teams have lost once.

Zanaco’s superior goal difference stems from a better defensive record as they have conceded five goals to Nkana’s eleven. Zanaco are also the highest scoring team with twenty three goals while Nkana have scored twenty two.

And Power Dynamos moved up to third with 24 points following a 2-1 victory at home to Kabwe Warriors.

Martin Phiri bundled home from close range to open the scoring on 28 minutes but Josephat Kasusu equalised eight minutes later for the two sides to share the spoils at the break.

Francis Kasonde made sure of maximum points on the 56th minute when he beat Solomon Sakala, poking the ball in at the far post following a speculative effort inside the box by Fwayo Tembo.

Meanwhile, Forest Rangers moved up to fifth with 21 points after a 2-0 victory away to Lusaka Dynamos thanks to goals by Ronald Chibwe and Nawa Nawa.

Elsewhere, a second half goal by Kabeya Mulume was the difference as Nchanga Rangers defeated Green Eagles in Chingola to move from eleventh to ninth position with 19 points.

Mufulira Wanderers dropped into eleventh position after playing out to a goalless draw with Napsa Stars on Friday.

Lusaka Tigers moved from fourteenth to twelfth courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Mufulira Blackpool. Francis Chongo and Martin Bwalya scored a goal apiece in each half.

The bottom of the standings maintained a familiar look with Napsa Stars, Lumwana Radiants, Lusaka Dynamos and Mufulira Blackpool cropping the bottom of the table.

Action continues with three matches scheduled for Sunday. At Independence Stadium Green Buffaloes will host Red Arrows while Nakambala Leopards will host Lumwana Radiants in Mazabuka.

The weekend’s top bill between Nkana and Zesco United will take place at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

  2. Zanaco are a little bit inconsistent if they are to win the league they need up their game a little by trying to score in every match at least.
