Zambia’s AFCON Opponents Tipped to Win Next Year’s World Cup

Zambia’s AFCON opponents Morocco have been tipped as one of the favourites to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup by former world champion Toni Kroos.

The retired German midfield maestro, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, has named four nations he believes have what it takes to go all the way at the next global showpiece.

“Spain, Portugal, France, Morocco,” said the Multiple Champions League winner when asked about his favourites

Kroos’ endorsement comes as Morocco prepare to face Zambia tonight in a decisive AFCON Group A encounter, a match that could shape the destiny of both sides at the tournament.

Morocco’s rising global status

Morocco’s growing reputation is built on solid foundations. The Atlas Lions made history at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals, defeating football heavyweights along the way.

That remarkable run changed global perceptions of African football and firmly placed Morocco among the elite.

Morocco have also qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underlining their consistency on the international stage.

They are among the African nations that have already secured qualification for the tournament, alongside: Senegal, Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt.

Their qualification further strengthens Kroos’ belief that Africa could finally produce a World Cup winner in the near future.

For now, however, all eyes are on tonight’s AFCON clash, where Zambia will test a Moroccan side already being spoken of in World Cup-winning terms.
