Zambia win sixth COSAFA title

Albert Kangwanda’s spectacular extra time goal was enough to secure Zambia a sixth COSAFA Cup title.

The Copper Bullets edged Namibia 1-0 to win the 2022 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup.

In a repeat of the 1998 final, Zambia played all the football as Namibia deployed a low block to frustrate the Chipolopolo.

Chipolopolo boss Aljosa Asanovic made three changes to his team heading into the final. Cyril Mwenya Chibwe, Prince Mumba and Patrick Gondwe made way for Charles Kalumba, Saddam Yusuf Phiri and Joshua ‘Budo’ Mutale.

Both teams started slow with Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba trying his luck from afar as his strike went wide off the Namibia goal.

Asanovic was forced to make an injury induced substitution just after 38 minutes as Spencer Sautu limped off and was replaced by Albert Kangwanda.

In the second half, Zambia came back a more aggressive side with Albert Kangwanda as the major tormentor for the Brave Warriors.

Despite several attempts mostly by Kangwanda and Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba there was no way to separate the two teams and extra time was called upon.

It took substitute Albert Kangwanda scoring a spectacular strike to propel Zambia to a 1-0 win over Namibia.

Zambia has joined Zimbabwe as the two most successful sides in Southern Africa (six COSAFA titles each).

Power Dynamos’ Joshua ‘Budo’ Mutale was the official man of the match.

Starting XI: 18. Charles Kalumba, 2. Allan Kapila, 3. Benedict Chepeshi, 4. Luka Chamanga (Prosper Chiluya 73′) 13. Dominic Chanda, 15. Kelvin Kapumbu (Patrick Gondwe 73′) 7. Kelvin Kampamba, 8. Saddam Phiri, 20. Spencer Sautu (Spencer Sautu 38′), 17. Joshua Mutale, 10. Ricky Banda (Jimmy Mukeya 85′ )
