Hamdy Fathy’s late header gave Egypt a narrow 1-0 win over Zambia in an international friendly match on Thursday evening in the United Arab Emirates.
Zambia went into the match looking for their first win over the Pharaohs since 1996.
The game was cagey from the word go despite Egypt starting as the better side in the early exchanges.
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah cut in on the right and tried to shoot at goal but a defender stood in the way and blocked with Francis Mwansa punching the deflecting ball away.
In the 20th minute, Patson Daka found Fashion Sakala in acres of space on the left wing, the Al Feiha forward drove into the box before sending Aly Gabr to the cleaners but Mohamed El Shenawy was quick to come out blocking Sakala’s effort.
Seven minutes later a beautiful passing phase created a chance for Fashion Sakala who beat two defenders with one move but his shot went just miles above the crossbar.
A minute later Francis Mwansa on the other end was called to action as he had to punch out a Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan low shot for a corner.
The match went to the break level at 0-0.
At the start of the second half Rui Vitoria made a change as Mohamed Elneny was rested for Ahmed ‘Zizo’ Sayed.
Sayed came on with a lot of energy and immediately looked to make an impact as he had a shot go just wide three minutes into the second stanza.
Two minutes later Kelvin Kapumbu had a shot but it was blocked. Trezeguet then tried to take things personally but his effort went wide.
Next to shoot wide was Lubambo Musonda before Trezeguet was denied by the crossbar at the hour mark after connecting well with a cross from Zizo.
In the 70th minute Zambia had a golden chance to take the lead, Benedict Chepeshi with a beautiful cross, Klings Kangwa in acres of space unmarked but the Red Star Belgrade man headed wide.
Substitute Marwan Attia had a shot from afar which went wide in the 83rd minute before Dominic Chanda could head wide also.
Francis Mwansa was finally beaten in additional time as Hamdy Fathy headed in a beautiful Zizo cross to put the Pharaohs in the lead.
The Chipolopolo Boys protested the goal claiming a foul on Stopila Sunzu by Fathy but to no avail
Egypt held on to win the match 1-0. Next up for Chipolopolo is another international friendly match against Uganda at the same venue.

The problem is that the new players are not getting enough playing time during friendly games. Take for example Mwepu and Bwalya. We can only build their confidence when they are given enough time.
