Zambia edge Mozambique to book a place at AFCON 2015

Zambia have sealed their place at the Equatorial Guinea Africa Cup of Nations after beating the Mambas of Mozambique 1 – 0 in a game played in Maputo today.

Zambia scored the lone goal in the second half when Given Singuluma benefited from a Rainford Kalaba assist to volley home from inside the area.

Zambia will also have Kennedy Mweene to thank after the veteran goalkeeper saved an Elias Mpelembe penalty which was dubiously awarded after Emmanuel Mbola was adjudged to have handled in the box when the ball clearly hit his knee.

Apart from the penalty, Mozambique will also look back at what could have been as they created the best chance of the first half when Mbola was beaten for pace for the Mozambican winger to brilliantly cross for his colleague who was found unmarked at the back post but failed to tap in.

Zambia created more in the second half and Mayuka hit the cross-bar but was judged to be off side before Kalaba’s shot came off the bar.

Lubambo Musonda who came in for Bruce Musakanya added another dimension to the game with his direct runs.

The win moves Zambia to 8 points the maximum number of points which Mozambique can get but the rules will favor Zambia as in case of a tie, the CAF rules state that the tie will be broken first by considering the number of points obtained in games between the teams concerned.

Zambia will on Wednesday play Cape Verde at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Mozambique Vs Zambia XI: Kennedy Mweene, Emmauel Mbola, Donashano Malama, Christopher Munthali (Davies Nkausu), Nyambe Mulenga, Nathan Sinkala, Rainford Kalaba, Bruce Musakanya (Lubambo Musonda), Given Singuluma, Emmanuel Mayuka (Evans Kangwa), Ronald Kampamba.

  1. Thanks for the win but our coaching bench needs to be changed, they failed to read the game once more. we had at least 5players the whole first half who were passengers, reorganize the team against Cape Verde.

  2. The team did what was expected. I still feel there is room for improvement. The young boy Lubambo Musonda changed the complexion of the game when he came on. He should start ahead of Bruce Musakanya who i felt was a peripheral figure during the entire match!

  3. Congrats boys but there is stil room for improvement, thanks to mweene for the penalty save which was not a penalty at all. Plse consider to give mweene the captainship with his experience is best placed to command the younger ones on the pitch.

  4. Zamfoot, hold it! Not yet qualified. Zambia has to beat CV convincingly. Today’s win was not convincing. Zambia had lady luck to thank for the win. Mozambique outplayed us in terms of tactics, speed in which most of our players we’re horrible. Manuka could not run past his markers. Defenders from Nkana were slow and pathetic. We need a good tactician who can transform this team.I also have lots of questioned, one being why Chisamba never played. This Bruce has never impressed me in Zambian colour. I was impressed though with Lubambo Musonda.

  5. Thanks Chipolopolo.

The weather issue upset me a lot but Zambia put in their best just like any other game in these qualifiers!

Nkausu saved us alot. He has proved that he is more experienced than Munthali. Malama was Pelembe’s food throughout but the match had made him stronger onwards!

Zambia has won away since October 2011.

  6. Zambia’s last away wins were against Comoros and Mozambique in 2011.

Can someone correct me? This is for Senior team and excludes Cecafa, Cosafa and Friendlies.

  7. Musakanya and that Zulu boy cant match Lubambo Musonda. I think a revised line up has to face Cape Verde not the slow ones I saw today!

  8. Well done boys! As I’d anticipated that this would be a very tactical match considering the stakes st hand. Could someone who watched the match be kind enough to give a more professional account of the way our boys fared please. No disrespect to Zamfoot, but some of us didn’t watch the match and would like to know amongst other things; if the Mayuka/Sate Sate combination worked, what our strengths or/and weaknesses were, did our approach give any indication that things are getting better? I believe in indepth analysis. @ ROK I’m counting on folks like you and others with football brains please.

  9. people were here saying janza cant do it. Yes he isn’t the best in the world but i told you he is going to qualify. Janza is even better than pathetic renard.

  10. We have to beat Cape Verde convincingly on Wednesday. Chisamba Lungu and Lubambo Musonda should start in that match ahead of Kampamba and Bruce Musakanya. We were not convincing enough in today’s game.

  11. I’ve been checking this site to see John’s comment on Cote D’voire, but as usual you hear anything. same with Nigeria. Some months back this same John was blabbing on how this two countries will not qualify bcos Dr congo and Congo are better teams. please John man up and start your blabbing again. I want to hear how mediocre Renard and is Ivorian team is and how useless nigeria team is too.

    • i thought you said zambia was a weak team. Herve renard cannot beat zambia. Zambia will butcher those ivorians we are slowly building a new team. Our u-20, u-17 and senior teams have all qualified for afcons we are a serious force in africa. Gone are the days of chris katongo we have a new team with hot talent like lubambo musonda waiting to destroy africa. I have always said mayuka is our main man he will lead us to glory.

  12. @John, i am one of those who said that Janza won’t be able to qualify the team to Afcon. I feel the new assistant coach has had a hand in how well the team the team is playing from the time he joined the technical bench. yes Janza is better than that useless and pathetic Herve Renard.

  13. these west africans were making noise on this site that we wouldnt qualify and they are elders. we have qualified there is nothing you can say. In fact zambia has qualified for the u-20,u-17 and senior afcon in 1 year. It shows we are building a very serious team that will destroy africa once again.

  14. Hard luck GHANA, Congrats to S.A after such a long time and NIGERIA we want u to qualify pls win yo last game against S.A so that ZAMBIA can win afcon 2015 with all power houses present…..we dont want anyone to say that it was a fluke…we want to set the record straight…….twalikwata imipashi ku equatorial guinea so 11 against 22….ifwe ni double double.

  15. Congrats Zambia
    I eat humble pie
    Lubambo played good
I think the strength of your team lies in its unified youth and expert experience
    Go high
But I wish ghana and Zambia paired in same group
    Viva Africa.
