Young Copper Queens eye COSAFA Championship defense

The Zambia U20 Women’s National Team will be looking to defend their COSAFA U20 Women’s Championship title when they kick off their campaign this weekend.

This year’s Tournament will be held as part of the Region 5 Games in Windhoek, Namibia from 4–13 July 2025.

Assistant coach Charity Nthala who will lead the team in the absence of head coach Florence Mwila says the preparations have been okay and the team is ready for the tournament.

Nthala says the team will take each and every game seriously as they look to get maximum points with a winning start to the tournament.

“The preparations have been okay, with the inclusion of the U17 girls who have beefed up the squad,” Nthala told the ZamFoot Crew.

“The group is okay, we are going to take each and every game seriously. We are going to start with South Africa and we know that they are a strong side so we have started the first game very positive so that we can get maximum points.”

“I think the team is confident to bring the trophy back home. We are going with a positive mind so that we can bring back the trophy,” she added.

Skipper Blessings Zangose Zulu says the morale is very high in camp and the players are working hard.

“We have prepared well, the morale is very high and we are working hard as a team,” she said.

“We just need to work together so that we don’t allow any goals so that we can finish the tournament without conceding. Our target is to win the tournament and not concede any goals.”

The Young Copper Queens have been placed in Group B alongside South Africa, Eswatini, and Angola, forming one of two pools in the competition.

Group A includes hosts Namibia, Mozambique, and Botswana, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals.
