WSL: Arrows maintain top spot, ZISD , Elite, Buffaloes and Prison Leopards record wins

By Moses Pedro Mwanza

Red Arrows Women Football Club has reclaimed top spot following their 2-nil win over Trident Queens in an exciting Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Women’s Super Division Week 33 match played this afternoon at Lusaka’s Nkoloma Stadium.

The Airwomen went into the match knowing that only a win would take them back to the summit after Buffaloes had temporarily taken the lead following their huge win earlier in the day.

A goal in each half from Mary Mambwe and second league top goal scorer Ochumba Oseke Lubanji ensured Red Arrows moved to 79 Points, one better than second-placed Green Buffaloes.

Goals from Barbara Moyo, Diana Banda, Maylan Mulenga and Bwalya Namute Chileshe gave Buffaloes a well deserved 4-0 win.

This will take the league to the wire with only a point separating the top two teams heading into the final week of action.

Elsewhere, Zambian Institute for Sustainable Development (ZISD) Women Football Club’s quest for survival in the top tier of Women’s Football received a boost after they narrowly edged Green Eagles 1-nil.

A second half goal from Zimbabwean international defender and skipper of the side Egness Tumbare was enough to seal victory.

ZISD were going into this game knowing very well that their fate lies in their own hands and a victory for the Kuchalo Girls has taken them to 32 points on fourteenth position, four above fifteenth-placed BUSA Queens who have a date against Indeni Rose’s on Tuesday away in Ndola.

ZISD are now off the relegation zone ahead of their sink or swim encounter against fellow relegation threatened side Play It Forward in their last league game next weekend.

BUSA on the other hand will host title contenders Red Arrows in a DO-OR-DIE fixture in order for them to have a chance of surviving relegation this season and hope ZISD drop points against Play It Forward.

Meanwhile, ZESCO Ndola Girls title hopes were shuttled after a disappointing 2-nil defeat suffered at the hands of The Elite Ladies in a game that was played at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.

A goal each from Comfort Selemani and league top goal scorer Xiomara Mapepa who has now moved to 28 goals were enough for the Elite Ladies to stun ZESCO who were hoping to pick up maximum points.

On Saturday, Prison Leopards Queens beat Play It Forward 1-0 while ZANACO LADIES played to a 1-1 draw with YASA Queens.
