U20 coach Hector Chilombo says some of the players from the Zambian side that won the COSAFA Under-20 Championship during the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five Games deserve a place in the main team for the Senegal 2015 Africa Youth Championship.
Chilombo said in an interview after watching his side beat hosts Zimbabwe 3-0 to lift gold on Sunday that he would consider fusing in most of the players into the squad ahead of the continental youth championship.
He said that the players showed courage and hunger to win the tournament and deserve to be in the main team.
“These players have played really well and cannot be left out of the main Under-20 team. It was important to have these players here so that we can see which others can be fused into the main team and I think the move has really helped.
There are a few here who can walk straight into the team but they will join the rest when we go into camp so they fight for their places and prove themselves,” said.
Seven-goal hero Patrick Ngoma, team captain Mangani Banda and Boyd Mkandawire are among the players who were in Zimbabwe and make up the Under-20 side captained by Lubambo Musonda.
Chilombo admitted their success had given him a selection problem as it would be harsh to leave some out because they are some point looked as good the players who are considered.
“It’s been a great outing and this is an early Christmas present to the people of Zambia. It has not been plain sailing here on the way to winning gold but I am happy the boys worked hard for it,” he said.

Patrick Ngoma is needed in the senior team, the boy is excellent talent
Lets watch out for MRI testing as we prepare for Senegal U-20 afcon. If the wining team was realy the u-20’s, then majority of them must be in Senegal come March 2015. This team was busy thrashing everyone who falls in their hands at cosafa, so thats what we need in Senegal to be sure of a world cup place.
Baby Hummer K said that, this is the best U-20 team Zambia had ever produced in 50 years, so we need to utilise it in Senegal. FAZ should stop interfering in teams selection.
Why Hector Chilombo sounding apologetic? We are not here to please anybody if this team demolished the region why he is sounding like there is a ‘special U20 team’ somewhere and he will beg to squeeze in the Gold Medalists? Actually it suppose to be the other way round let FAZ U20 team work so hard to be squeezed into the Chilombo U20 team. We really need to clean out this rot in FAZ, besides its the FAZ U20 that was knocked-out in first round in COSAFA U20 last year.
You are spot on judge. Carry on!No further comment your honor!
Judge u are right. We dont need to necesarily change this team unless some players will not be u20’s next year in March. We do not have too many pros in u-20 team to replace majority wining team, except Lubambo Musonda. Faz should not let us down with their prefered corrupt players.
The team that minted gold is z fringe team. except Mangani Banda, Boyd Mkandawire & Patrick Ngoma. If u know the U20 main team, u’d agree that Chilombo won’t have it easy to select a team. Full back red arrows Benedict Chepeshi,Centre backs Kayawe Kapota, Power Dynamos A lex Mwamba, holding midfielder Spencer Sautu, attacking midfielder Larry BwalyBwalya, pacey wingers captain Lubambo Musonda * Charles Zulu & striker Saith Sakala along side Patrick Ngoma. If u know the quality oof these players & then u have these guys who minted gold, I’ud agree with me that selecting a teamteam will not be easy. Zambia has great depth.
Martinez, you have quiet a mouthful of player names, when did you last see U20 team scoring 19 straight goals in only 5 games? Lets not confuse Chilombo let Gold Medal Team be the main team the FAZ U20 to fused into it. Dont mix up names or playing names, but team to be based on performance.
The under 20 that Chilombo is talking about is the one that did the job to qualify for the African youth championship, just incase you didn’t know.
The technical team should just choose a squad based on performance and technical qualities rather than loyalty to those players that have been in the u20 main team. Loyalty to the Afcon 2012 players is what cost Zambia a place at the 2014 world cup. Even when some players were not performing they were still used by Renard.
Thats what Iam trying to convey to @Martinez up there! Lets not play names just becoz FAZ know this one or that one. If I was the coach I would just take the same boys from Zimbabwe all the way to Senegal!
For me i think we need to carry players on form. The bulk of the team that Hector carried was second string to the main one small wonder everyone wanted to prove a point to the coach. The biggest threat to us performing at Senegal 2015 is ourselves. The players selected start to feel they have arrived and complacence creeps in. We need “Football” Psychologists to be attached to the team to psyche them up in the right way.
Either thy did a job of qualifyng or not,the best team is the team whch came from zim.
