U17, U20 get tricky draws for African championships

The Zambia U17 and U20 national teams will play in group A and group B respectively at the CAF 2015 championships which are mainly littered with West African opposition.

The Chris Kaunda coached U17 team which will be making a maiden appearance at the championship has been given unfamiliar opposition and will play Niger, Nigeria and Guinea in the group stage.

With Niger playing as hosts, Zambia will have their work cut out for them as they have to play experienced campaigners at junior level Nigeria in a tournament that will run from 15 February to 1 March, 2015.

The U17 will be aiming for a semi final berth to book a place at the Chile FIFA World Cup finals. The U20 on the other hand have been grouped with fellow Cosafa representatives South Africa and will have to overcome a challenge from Ghana and Mali for a place in the semi finals which will guarantee a place at the New Zealand finals later in the year.

U20 Coach Hector Chilombo will go in the tournament confident as his player have been exposed to competitive action in the league while a handful of them led by skipper Lubambo Musonda are part of the senior national team.

The U20 tournament will run from 8-22 March 2015 and will be played in Senegal.

  1. from 1999 wen Zambia qualified for their first worldcup. they failed to qualify for three afcons under 20, 2001, 2003 & 2005. only to qualify for the 2007 edition and qualify for the 2007 wordcup in Canada. after that they once again failed to qualify for three more afcon, 2009, 2011 & 2013. but have qualified to the 2015 afcon to which they will qualify to the under 20 worldcup.

  2. paradox. too myopic. nigeria are experts at junior level. so is ghana. both have won the world cup before. the problem in zambia is lack of a proper youth system.

  3. Nigerians are too too old, thats where u find real age cheating. Nevertheless our junior teams have everything to qualify. The draws are just fair, what we should know is that we are going to the world cup, there is no need to fear MADALAz from Nigeria

  4. Zambia loves to play Ghana because they can learn from them and try to be like them but can never be like them. Ghana has been powerhouse in Africa for a long time and will only excel from here. LETS NOT FOOL OURSELVES. GHANA vs GERMANY was 2-2 . GERMANY WENT ON TO WIN THE CUP. THE ONLY TEAM THEY HAD TROUBLE WITH WAS GHANA. WE ALL SAW THAT GAME AND KNOW GHANA SHOULD HAVE WON. MAKING THEM THE GREATEST TEAM IN AFRICA PERIOD. ZAMBIA WILL FALL TRYING TO DOWN GHANA, ZAMBIA SHOULD RATHER LEARN FROM GHANA SO THEY TOO CAN RISE

  5. @Chuchu you are living in the past since lifting the AFCON in 2012, Zambia is an stoppable and you will see how your team will be treated. I am seeing Zambia and South Africa pulling through to the next round. Mark mark my words chuchu, Ghana will fall. The problem with Ghanians, you don’t accept defeat especially to deal with Zambia.

  6. @Nazo, Keep fooling yourself thinking you people are on Ghana level when you cant even beat Lesotho to qualify for world cup with 3 free points and you want to talk you IDOT. by the way Ghana will always beat Zambia when it counts, just because you fluked 1 afcon you think your a powerhouse. LETS SEE HOW FAR ZAMBIA GET THIS TIME ROUND WHEN ALL AFRICAN TEAMS ARE MORE SERIOUSE THAN EVER AT THIS AFCON. P.s im from SA so don’t get it twisted, even I know SA will struggle against GHANA.

  7. Which ever way you look at it, its going to be a tough competition for all teams. We just have to prepare very well and mind our business. Respect the opposition and never fear them. We can stand toe to toe with all the teams when the right preps and approach are used. Mal, Nigeria and Ghana have very strong youth systems and that can be seen in the past experiences. But they are not invincible.

  8. It baffles my mind when i hear some arrogant Zambians like paradox, mumbi etc or what ever they call themselves trying to compare Zambia national teams to countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and Egypt. These countries are the real powerhouse of Africa Football. Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon are the only countries that have chalked successes for Africa at the world stage. Any right thinking human being will not argue over this. The earlier you guys appreciate this fact, the better for you. Hatred , jealousy and iniquity will not take you anywhere.

  9. AFRICAN PROVEN POWERHOUSE ON INTERNATIONAL STAGE, GHANA-NIGERIA-CAMEROON-EGYPT. THESE ARE THE COUNTRIES THAT HAVE PUT AFRICAN SOCCER ON THE MAP. POINT BLANK CASE CLOSED. YOU HAVE TO BE A FOOL WHO DOESNT KNOW SHIT TO TRY AND OPEN THIS CASE AGAIN. TWWWWWWWEEEEEAAAA

  10. @ chuchu – a list Zambia, flaked 1 AFCON in 2012 by beating self proclaimed favorites like Senegal,Ghana and Ivory coast. When is Ghana going to flake one? By the way, we wired GHANA at Mwanawasa by 1-0 and we lost in Kumasi by 2-1 by.Who is better? And how many afcon has Egypt and cameroon missed for them to be better in Africa than any other team on average? Yes iam the most idiotic person when it comes to support Zambia and football at large.

  11. Look at another arrogant and myopic commentator by name Nazo or whatever he call himself. The fact that Cameroon and Egypt have missed couple of afcon tournaments does not mean Zambia is ahead of them. Cameroon was at the 2014 world cup in Brazil.Egypt qualified to the last round playoff. Where was Zambia? You failed to qualify after receiving free three points. Holland defeated Brazil in the last two world cups( 2010 & 2014) but does not make Holland a better football country than Brazil because, achievements of Brazil in football far outweigh that of Holland.

You guys should Continue to celebrate Mediocrity because that is what you are good at.

  12. @Mankind90 in football there are no permanent positions, it is a game and it fr actuates. And who Zambia is better than Cameroon and Egypt? Read properly my brother.
