Zambia (2) v Cameroon (3)
Africa Cup of Nations Group B
Alexandria, Egypt
This was Zambia’s first game at the 1986 tournament against Cameroon which saw Zambia go down 3 – 2.
A tight match for Zambia as they twice had to come from behind but failed to hold their own to lose 3 – 2. Roger Miller (’46) and Louis-Paul M’fede (’67,’82) scored for Cameroon while Michael Chabala (’65) and Kalusha Bwalya (’77) scored for Zambia.
In the photo, Laban Chishala (L) and Langson Phiri (R) police Cameroonian Mamoudou Oumarou who came in the game as an 84th minute substitute as the West African were trying to close the game down.
Langson “Forces” Phiri replaced Charles Musonda in the game who was hurt and could not play on.
Anita –
Langson Phiri was at the AFCON 1986. He was school boy international at the time from Libala Boys Secondary school
Sly –
In the group stage of CAN that came after the Zambia Saudi Arabia game Zambia lost 2 – 3 to the Lions of Cameroon . The result was influenced by the referees so much that when Kalusha scored to level matters by making it 2-2 the main official awarded Cameroon a dubious penalty. Yes ba Kafusha, Mfede was there and Langdon Phiri was one of those players who came in to replace the old horses who were dropped.
The coach was Brightwell Banda. He was assisted by Boniface Simutowe while the late Sam Zoom Ndhlovu was the technical director.
The squad included the following :Efford Chabala, Peter Banda, Laban Chishala,Peter Mwanza, Kapambwe Mulenga,Jones Chilengi,Webby Chilufya,Ashios Melu,Edwin Kanyanta, Charles Musonda,Derby Makinka, Langson Phiri,Jericho Shinde, Jack Chanda,Chilufya Mwenya,Boniface Chanda, Michael Chabala, Hector Chisompola,Wisdom Chansa and Kalusha Bwalya.

Katwishi
Zamfoot I thot u gave Amos Mumba a red card from this site after calling u a Dog. y is he still around???????
Far right is Langson ‘Forces’ Phiri
The 2 Zambian players should be Jones Chilenji and John Kalusa. The Cameroon player is difficult to tell but he looks like Louise Paul Mfede It was a World cup qualifying game played around April in 1985. Whether it is the 4-1 win in Lusaka or the 1-1 draw in Cameroon, is difficult to tell as the teams used the same set of uniforms home and away, however my guess is that it is the game played around April 1985 at the Independence Stadium in Lusaka, that Zambia won 4-1 with late “Big Mike” Michael Chabala scoring a hatrick within 11 minutes
Ba kafusha its lyk u ar 1 of zambia’s no1 fan
Could it be a game between Zambia n Cameroon?
Thnk u ba zamfut 4 these throwbaks its lyk lerning zambian futbo histry despit not knwing the prayas
Looks like Peter Kaumba on the near side
Sir Jojo Peter Kaumba had since retired from a crude “bone marrow” spilling tackle from Warriors’ Spider Chiale at Kafubu-i cried seeing such an illustrious career of the best scoring winger Zambia ever had!
Drifting away from the topic ,mweene yet again missed a penalty…feel he should stay away from taking penalties
@paradox, what about the one siting in the middle of your profile pic? Is it yourself?
ya thats me.lool
Sorry was nt thr… I wud say its a Division 1 game probably Kalomo Jetters Vs Nampundwe
Behind the Cameroon player is Lungson Phiri. He , together with a fellow Zambian by the name of Meshack Kwanza once featured for a Francistown based army outfit known as Tatitown Sporting Club (TASC) in the late eighties and early nineties. What a player he was!
This game was against Cameroon in April 1985. There was no Lungson Phiri in the lineup nor on the bench at that time. Anyway maybe I don’t remember him. The coach at that time was Col Brightwell Banda
@Sly who is this Lungson Phiri? During that I only heard of a defender called Bernard Phiri who played a few games for Zambia under Col. Banda, this dude was from a club in the midlands
Sly and Vinkubala are right as this should be the game at Afcon 86 we lost to Cameroun. That’s Langson “Forces” Phiri (Ex-Malaiti Rangers and Zanaco) who replaced Charles Musonda (his first and last Afcon appearance). The other one is Laban Chishala indeed
Ba Justice, true it was Langson Phiri, who left a mark in Botswana football when he used to partner Mechack Mwanza at TASC. The two, formed a deadly partnership upfront for TASC and Mechack later tracked down to RSA.
This was the 1985 game and there was no Lnagston Phiri!!
Langson Phiri wasn’t in the 1985 games but at Afcon 86 which is this one
I guess the Zambian players should be Laban Chishala-GBFC and Aron Ndlovu-Red Arrows,Big Mike chabala scored a hat trick, and kalusha and Jack chanda had good games-that is if its the one played at Independence stadium.
Remember Africa Cup of Nations 1986 – Alexandria Egypt
One of the worst performances by the Zambia national team at Africa Cup of Nations when Zambia exited in the first round with only a point. Charles Musonda was substituted for Langson Phiri.
Uncle Bobs, where are you?
Boss apologies for coming late I was so tied up today. U’re on point my man
Okay if this was an exam ninshi nawa! No clue… I don’t even which team is Zambia.
Zimandola don’t despair as we were also like u in the 70s but took keen interest in knowing history of the Zooms, Ginger Pensulo, Philip Sabu, etc. I’d urge u to buy a copy of Ucar’s book
Zamfoot kindly update us on the story concerning Mayuka joining Reading FC that ply their trade in the English Championship on a 3 year deal….
There is no such news on Readings website, maybe they are still negotiating
@ Justice Kafusha, In 1982 Zambia was invited to play Saudi Arabia. The host won the game 1 – 0. The loss was attributed to fatigue because the Zambia contingent had not slept for a long time. This is according to the Saudi journalists view. Langson Phiri was a new inclusion.
The coach was Brightwell Banda. He was assisted by Boniface Simutowe while the late Sam Zoom Ndhlovu was the technical director.
The squad included the following :Elfort Chabala, Peter Banda
Laban Chishala,Peter Mwanza, Kapambwe Mulenga,Jones Chilengi,Webby Chilufya,Ashios Melu,Edwin Kanyanta.
Charles Musonda,Derby Makinka, Langson Phiri,Jericho Shinde.
Jack Chanda,Chilufya Mwenya,Boniface Chanda, Michael Chabala, Hector Chisompola,Wisdom Chansa and Kalusha Bwalya. Ba Justice this is the Zambian team that included Him.
Okay and thanks my Brother for the update
Ya, as a Nkana fan, Ba Justice, the player on the right doesn’t look like John Kalusa. Hard for me to pick the two! Imyaka!
I am lost too the only thing I am certain about is that the was a game vs Cameroon in 1985. The only players I remember from the game are Chabala, Shinde, Chilenji Jones, Simukonda F., Big Mike, Kalu, Muchofe, Makinka, coming in as sub. Oh no this is a tricky one, I stop here
Ati Hector Chisompola!! you just took me waaay back!!
Hmmmmm Data yafuma
If it was Zambia vs Cameroun in 1985, it was the first ever game I watched at Independence, I went with my uncles
Fc platinum and zambian international speed winger obby chirwa has joined top danish club .. Please zam foot give us full about obby chirwa’s recent move.. Its good to learn about the past but it does not develop our football..
I have just checked with the Danish Clubs, Obby Chirwa is on the players list for Hobro FC, a Danish Super League Club. I watched beat Brondby (C. Katongo’s former club 2-0 away from home). Obby is still to be given a number, but his name is on the list.
@ justice. You are right that it was against Cameroon though.
In the group stage of CAN that came after the Zambia Saudi Arabia game Zambia lost 2 – 3 to the Lions of Cameroon . Langson Phiri was at the AFCON 1986. He was school boy international at the time from Libala Boys Secondary school, but am not sure if he is the one in the picture. He played the first against Cameroun. He went in as a substitute.
Learning things 4rm these conversations but I c very few really followed football that time. Bring photos of time we shall give u accurate answers thts 4rm Afcon 96 to afcon 2015. This big mike chabala was he really gud how cm I’ve neva read anythin on him.
*photos of our time*
Once bloggers hqve suggested names, zamfoot administrators should come in wnd tell us who those players are.
We always do!
Ok, did some research. The words on the picture are Omarou struggles against Zambian defenders. Checked the 1986 Cameroon squad and it had Omarou on the list so this looks like it is from the 1986 AFCON match where Zambia lost 3-2. Just still out on who the Zambian players are.
I do remember this game very well as I was doing my 4th year at UNZANDO that time. We watched it on the only colour TV the University had then.
In this game a 16 year old (or even less) budding talent in the name of Charles Musonda from Mufulira Wanderers (then in Grade 9 at Mufulira Sec. School)was hit by a very hard shot in the face when Zambia made a protective wall. The shot was fired by Louis-Paul M’fede, and you could see his concern for the young lad. This marked the substitution point for Charles and the end of his exploits in this AFCON.
I do also remember that during the build up to this game, the KK11 were playing an NCZ-KTZ select side at Khosa in Kafue Estates, I was amazed but nor surprised to see ba Zoom bring in this very young chap who I last saw playing mu reserves ground outside Shinde, his colleagues then called him Alex Chola.
He was an unknown quantity and people at Khosa were asking me (a Mufulira boy) who he was.
Kasama boy, I watched that practice match between Kafue select and KK 11. I tell u, if it was today all those players who featured for Kafue select side, would be play in our National team with easy. They gave a good account of themselves. The match was entertaining though t was goalless. Remember one Bala who was tormented by the young Kalu?
FAZ bring back the All stars vs The rest game in november, the public will pick the rest as it were in the past.
@Kalampa, I second your motion!
I was in grade 4 when this match was played we outplayed Cameroun but the ref decided the game
