MTN Super League side ZESCO United’s pursuit for George Chilufya has hit a snag and talks have broken down, the ZamFoot Crew understands.
The two parties were close to reaching an agreement for ‘Chonto’ to take over as head coach.
However the ZamFoot Crew understands that they disagreed on the length of the deal with Chilufya wanting a long term partnership while ZESCO were only willing to offer him a short term deal.
“George (Chilufya) was ready to make the switch but he felt disappointed with the offer of only taking charge for a short term ( Transitional league season) which he felt was counterintuitive to leave Kabwe Warriors for only a short term deal,” a source in Ndola told the ZamFoot Crew.
Zega Mambo turned to Chilufya after talks with George ‘Chicken’ Lwandamina stalled following an initial verbal agreement for the former Mufulira Wanderers defender to make a return to Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
The ZamFoot Crew understands that ZESCO United have now switched their attention to a named Lusaka based MTN Super League coach and a possibility for a coach from outside has not been ruled out.
ZESCO United are looking for a fresh start after a disappointing 2025/2026 campaign that saw them miss out on the ABSA Cup and finish in the bottom half of the table.
Under Chilufya, Kabwe Warriors finished fourth on the log and looked like contenders for continental football.
