Sunday Super League recap: Zanaco thump LD as Warriors leave it late

Sunday, February 3rd saw everything else overshadowed by the first ever CAF Confederation Cup game between Zambian teams that saw Zesco United host Nkana at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

However the MTN/FAZ Super League had a big game of its own which did not get enough attention. It was Numba Mumambas Sensational Zanaco taking on Danny Kabwe’s Lusaka dynamos. The bankers came into this match on the back of a 4-1 win on match day one and were highly motivated.

Rodger Kola put the bankers in the lead after just six minutes as he got on the end of aTafadzwa Rusike pass. Lusaka dynamos immediately started pushing for an equaliser and they were finally rewarded in the 19th minute, Emmanuel Habasimbi pulling them level off a Willy Stephanus assist.

Rusike and Kola combined again to put the bankers in the lead just three minutes after the equaliser to make sure Zanaco went to the break with a 2-1 lead.

In the second half Zanaco continued their emphatic showing and after 13 minutes Guily Manziba doubled the lead. Rusike made it 4-1 in the 71st minute. Habasimbi was determined on the day and eight minutes later reduced the deficit.

Second half substitute Felix Nyaende added a fifth shortly after coming on as Zanaco completed their 5-2 win and maintain their 100 percent start to the season.

Earlier in the day Kabwe Warriors staged a late come back scoring twice in additional time to beat Kitwe United 2-1 at Garden Park.

The game between the two was abandoned in the 58th minute due to an unplayable pitch following a heavy downpour. On Sunday the match resumed from the 58th minute and two minutes after the restart Kitwe United took the lead.

The hosts looked set to collect maximum points but Paul Simpemba equalised in the 90th minute before Patrick ‘Animal’ Kasunga could win it with a headed effort in additional time to put cherry on top of a dramatic game played over two days.
