There are two types of current, namely alternating current, and direct current, Direct current is used in any electronic device with a battery for a power source. It is also used to charge batteries, so rechargeable devices like laptops and cell phones come with an AC adapter that converts alternating current to direct current.
Alternating current (AC) is the type of electric current generated by the vast majority of power plants and used by most power distribution systems. The big advantage that alternating current provides for the power grid is the fact that it is relatively easy to change the voltage of the power, using a device called a transformer. Power companies save a great deal of money this way, using very high voltages to transmit power over long distances.
How does this work? Well, let’s say that you have a power plant that can produce 1 million watts of power. One way to transmit that power would be to send 1 million amps at 1 volt. Another way to transmit it would be to send 1 amp at 1 million volts. Sending 1 amp requires only a thin wire, and not much of the power is lost to heat during transmission. Sending 1 million amps would require a huge wire.
So power companies convert alternating current to very high voltages using a step-up transformer at the generating center or the source e.g at Kariba Dam for transmission (such as 1 million volts), then drop it back down using a step-down transformer at the substation e.g msoro substation in Chipata Eastern province to lower voltages for distribution (such as 1,000 volts), and finally down to 120 volts inside the house for safety using the transformers we see in our compounds.
ZESCO UNITED THE STEP UP AC TRANSFORMER.
We have said alternating current (AC) transformer. What does alter mean?. To alter means to change, so if something is alternating, it is always changing. Is ZESCO United alternating and acting as a step-up transformer?. Yes, they are!. The big question is how?. This is how they have shown to be a step transformer for the upcoming season.
ZESCO SIGNINGS!
They have brought in three quality players through their ranks who are proven top performers in the name of Lazarous Phiri, a winger from Green eagles on a season-long loan, Bruce Musakanya who has also joined the Ndola outfit on a 2-year loan from the airmen (Red arrows) to bolster their midfield. They have also brought in Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba from kalampa Nkana on a two-year contract, a lethal, tricky midfielder who is also a dead ball specialist.
They have also promoted six players from their feeder clubs, the six players are 18-year-old striker Emmerson Kabwe and 26-year-old defender Gilbert Tembo who were both playing for Zesco Malaiti Rangers, 18-year-old attacking midfielder Thomas Mubita who was with Zesco Victoria Falls.
Others who have been promoted are Willard Nkausu, Victor Chanda, and Mutale Sangwani. In total ZESCO United has brought in nine players as the club aims to win the league and return to Continental football.
Our aim is to sign quality players because its only quality that will bring success to the club. We have brought in these players to send a big statement of intent to return in CAF and to reclaim the league title
HOW HAVE ZESCO ACTED LIKE A ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC) STEP TRANSFORMER?
Missing out on the league glory and CAF competition qualification has made them change their squad to meet the current demand for the game and add depth and quality to their fore.
The signings zesco united have made are enough to see them match the current competition on the local scene possibly even on the international stage. They still need to make reinforcements but in football, you don’t overhaul or let everything go at once, Football is a patience entity.
The other area where they have STEPPED UP is the unveiling part. Seeing many teams on the continent taking good strides in the issue of unveiling players, they have also followed suit. The unveiling part was superb, the video about the players and a few details about them was all good. It is just the beginning, so expect them to improve and make a mark for themselves.
OOZING WITH CHARACTER AS TEAM YA ZIKO
They carry a huge responsibility for the nation, Zambia, No wonder they are called team ya ziko(team for the nation). They have shown this by being the only Zambian club to have to reach CAF champions league semi-finals in the current organization. What is a character in football circles? It is a group of qualities that make a team different from others.
Failure to win the league and qualify for CAF competition has made them work hard on the market by making signings to push them back to the top, every Zambian team wants to achieve what they have achieved in CAF competition, So Zesco united want to be different from other teams. They want to maintain the top stature of being unmatched on the pitch by any team and they want to be known by such characteristics.
With such developments which have taken place at zesco United, we expect them to be a different team and challenge for every honor on their way. Football has become expensive, if you don’t spend, nothing will be reaped out of it. You can’t reap where you have not sowed, Zesco has sowed and we expect them to reap. The big question is, “what are they going to reap in the 2020/2021”, Will it be the league, ABSA cup glory, or just a slot for Continental football, The onus is on them, the fans can only wait anxiously for the new season.
Is this step-up transformer going to step up and cushion the electricity deficit on the pitch? or they will continue facing load-shedding challenges, well only the new season will give us an answer to that. They way they are looking right now they may just show character and take every team to the cleaners and eventually reclaim the team ya ziko stature.
Will the 2020/2021 season be powered by sufficient electricity? The answer to that question will only come once the 2020/2021 season commences on 17th October, for now, it’s just to wait and see.
