Solwezi Academy Queens quartet evacuated to UTH

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) on Sunday afternoon evacuated Solwezi seriously injured victims to Lusaka for further medical attention.

The evacuation was facilitated with the help of the government through the Ministry of Youth, Art and Sports.

“The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) wishes to inform the football community and stakeholders that four accident victims from Solwezi Queens Academy who were seriously injured have been evacuated to Lusaka.

FAZ president Andrew Kamanga has thanked the government through the Ministry of Youth, Art and Sports and their health counterparts for facilitating the evacuation of the critically ill patients.”

The quartet that was evacuated aboard a Zambia Flying Doctors plane are Emeriana Melitu, Mwandu Musonda, Regina Sanduke and Ruth Chinyama.

“The four players have been flown to Lusaka on recommendation from the medics and we are grateful that the government has made this possible through the ministry of sports and their health counterparts,” Kamanga told FAZ Media.

“The quartet is now at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) and we are monitoring their progress.”

Kamanga went on to confirm that the players and technical staff that had been discharged from Mkushi District Hospital were being taken back to Solwezi.

“In the meantime, we have dispatched our General Secretary to Mkushi to coordinate the dispatch of the bodies to Solwezi and also the survivors who are out of danger back to their bases,” he said.

“FAZ will take up the costs for burial of the deceased but will work closely with families and the provincial leadership.”

Kamanga has also thanked the North Western and Central Province football leadership for responding swiftly to the tragedy and ensuring that the survivors were treated quickly.

The Solwezi Queens Academy bus was involved in a road traffic accident on Saturday morning along the Serenje-Mpika road whilst the team was heading to Mpika for a Week Four fixture with Mpika Doves.
