Robert Banda close range finish sends Young Chipolopolo to AFCON

Sporting Lusaka product Robert Banda scored the winner as Zambia U17 National Team booked a place at Next year’s TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.

The Young Copper Bullets came from a goal down to beat arch rivals South Africa 2-1 to seal a place in the COSAFA Qualifiers final and book their ticket to continental showpiece.

Despite conceding an early goal to Simphiwe Mlondo in the 1st minute, Ian Bakala’s lads rallied back, with Abel Nyirongo converting a penalty in the 22nd minute and substitute Robert Banda scoring the decisive goal in the 67th minute to seal a hard fought win.

The Young Chipolopolo will face Angola, who defeated Zimbabwe 2-0 in the other semi-final, in the grand finale on Friday, 13 December 2024, at 15h00 at the UJ Soweto Stadium in Johannesburg.

Both Angola and Zambia will represent the region at the U17 AFCON in 2025.
