Power Dynamos moved to the summit of the MTN Super League standings after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Green Eagles in Kitwe on Wednesday.
The defending champions were made to work for all three points, but defender Dominic Chanda proved the unlikely hero, rising highest in the first half to score the decisive goal that settled a tense contest at Arthur Davies Stadium.
Power Dynamos started the match on the front foot, dominating possession and pinning Green Eagles in their own half for long spells. Their pressure eventually paid off midway through the first half when Chanda capitalised on a well-delivered set piece, powering home a header to give the hosts the lead.
Green Eagles, however, refused to go down without a fight. The visitors reorganised after the break and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, testing Power Dynamos’ defensive resolve. Goalkeeper and backline stood firm, repelling several dangerous attacks as the champions showed maturity and composure to protect their slender advantage.
Despite creating further chances to extend the lead, Osward Mutapa’s side were unable to add to the scoreline, leaving the outcome in doubt until the final whistle. In the end, disciplined defending and game management ensured Power Dynamos held on for a crucial win.
The victory takes Power Dynamos to 32 points at the top of the table, one point clear of Red Arrows, although the Airmen have two games in hand.
Attention now shifts to continental football, with Mutapa’s men set to travel to Nigeria next week for a CAF Champions League encounter against Rivers United, as they look to continue their strong form on the African stage.
