The Zambia national team lost 3 – 2 to Guinea Bissau to leave the Chipolopolo hanging on a shoe-string for their qualification to the 2017 Gabon Africa Cup of Nations.
The ZamFoot Crew rated the players:
Kennedy Mweene 5 – Conceded three on the night, could have done very little about the penalty and the third goal. He was not helped by the referee on the second goal as the ball was clearly poked out of his hand. A finger tip save in the first half when he dived to his left after the Zambia defense was exposed showed that he still has good reflexes. He worked hard in organizing a defense which always seemed vulnerable on set-pieces.
Kabaso Chongo 4.5 – Was part of a poor defensive unit, and he was beaten to the ball as early as the 5th minute when his striker got ahead of him for the first strike on target for G Bissau. Going forward he looked sharp and sent in the most crosses in the game. His overlapping runs gave G Bissau something extra to think about.
Boyd Mkandawire 4.5 – Forget about the last minute howler and you will give it to him as one of his best games at senior level. He was solid in defense and timed his tackles to perfection. He didn’t offer anything in terms of crosses going forward. A poor touch in the last minute after the ball awkwardly bounced in front of him saw his header beat Sunzu and Chama for Bissau to take advantage and score the winner.
Adrian Chama 4 – A poor game by his standards. Struggled to contain Mendy, but his pace helped Zambia when he covered ground to stop the striker who had run loose. His recovery was vital though Mweene was still left with work to do to tip the ball around the upright.
Stopilla Sunzu 3 – He has had better games for Zambia. Sluggish and was responsible for two goals conceded. Conceded the soft penalty (maybe should not have been given) and he did not push up quickly enough once Chama had moved the defensive offside line up for the second goal. Could have conceded a second a penalty when he fouled the attacker on the edge of the box.
Nathan Sinkala 5 – Nothing exceptional, gave an okay performance.
Paul Katema 2.5 – He had a poor game. Seemed to have been thrown on the pitch to cover a lot of ground which he did very well but to no effect. He failed to complete his passes. He was substituted at half time.
Rainford Kalaba 5.5 – He provided the assist for Mbesuma’s goal after a brilliant turn and also picked Kalengo with a long ball into the box. Looked bright on the day and tracked back very well. He failed to stump his authority in terms of goal threat.
Christopher Katongo 6 – Scored the second for Zambia. He strung his passes well and worked hard for the team.
Collins Mbesuma 7 – Zambia’s best player. Scored one and provided the assist for Katongo. Started the game behind the main striker and played deep but ended the game leading the line. His brilliant skill saw him get Zambia’s first shot on target to show that he was up to the task. Offered very little towards the end as he clearly ran out of gas.
Winstone Kalengo 2.5 – One of his worst game in the Chipolopolo jersey. Once he was moved wide to accommodate Mbesuma, he quickly fizzled out of the game and it is hard to remember anything good he did.
Substitutes:
Salulani Phiri (for Katema) 5.5 – Did well to track the runners once he came in. He tried to string passes going forward. Zambia looked better once he came on.
Lubambo Musonda (for Katongo) 3 – Was expected to add a gear in Zambia’s attack with is his craftiness and pace but he failed to offer anything significant to the attack.
Evans Kangwa (for Kalaba) 2.5 – The striker did not offer much in the few minutes he played.
I have said it and most of you can attest to it ,that paul katema, boyd ,chepeshi ,are two inexperienced players who cannot win us anything at that level.this are same players who made us point when we just started the qualifiers .The coach has always been useless ,kabamba or nkausu would have started ahead of boyd ,and the substitution of chris and kalaba leaving winstone who was lost was shocking.
why keep kalengo when he was doing nothing.up to now cant understand.George was not up to any good yesterday .
I don’t knw why zambian players fail to play well whn a local coach is in charge. Its only a white man who can motivate them, thts bad. They should emulate the black stars. Kwesi appia took Ghana to the world cup. Now tht we knw a local coach can’t motivate Zed players, its time we Hired a french or serbian coach

it’s not about the players it’s the coach who has failed to do his job well,yesterdays game was our game if the coach had used the good players.he had players like Nkausu,Chisamba but instead he opted to use players like Boyd,Phiri and Kangwe who were not adding anything to the game, anyway it’s had time for BA FAZ to start looking for another coach Chicken has failed as.

I am wondering as well. The quality to win a game of that magnitude is in abundance in Zed. Roderick,Charles Zulu,Kabamba, …….even untested goalies. Mwene is not good enough anymore. Yes he is experienced but how did he get it? I can sum it up by suggesting that Zambia is failing to manage its football talent.

I think it is the point difference between two teams in a group which would determine second best placed teams because a team even third in a group may accumulate more points than second and may be even first in another group. Zambia must scatter Kenya and hope Congo win by less goals bcos u have same aggregate scores. Score more goals and hope things go ur way cause Tunisia’s group may provide a good second placed team as well as Burkina Faso’s group.

For world cup qualifying, the questions Zambia should answer in terms of readyness is this;
1. Can Zambia get a good result in Algeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Tunisia and Senegal with this form? (for Ghana I know Zambia will discipline us so we out of this one).
2. Can Zambia get at least a 1-0 win over this teams at home?
3.How will Zambia fare against the likes of Uganda, Guinea, DRC and lower ranks? Can u get the double over them or at least 4 points (Remember what role Sudan and Lesotho played in your failure.)
