Nyirenda, Lwandamina Back Chipolopolo Ahead of AFCON

By Chansa Kunda | ZNBC

Former Chipolopolo Coach Wedson Nyirenda has urged fans not to crucify Coach Moses Sichone and the players for recent friendly match losses ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nyirenda explained that friendly games are meant to give the coach an overview of the team’s strengths and weaknesses before major competitions. Despite defeats to South Africa, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, he stressed that the results do not reflect Zambia’s true potential in Morocco. He added that expectations remain high, with the team required to perform well in the group stage and qualify for the knockout phase.

Meanwhile, Coach George Lwandamina expressed confidence in the squad, saying Zambia has a good team capable of delivering at AFCON. He emphasized the need for unity, character, and determination, urging players to rise to the occasion and play for national pride. Lwandamina reminded the team that Zambia’s 2012 AFCON triumph is an honor that must be protected.

The two coaches shared their views in an interview with ZNBC Sports in Lusaka.
