Nkana FC and Zesco United played out a 1-1 draw in an extended pre-season friendly as both sides continued preparations for Zambia’s Transitional League.
The match, played in Kitwe on Thursday, lasted 135 minutes, with the teams using the unusual format as part of their preparations for the new campaign.
Nkana took an early lead through Gift Msiska and held on to their advantage for much of the contest.
Zesco eventually levelled from the penalty spot in the 109th minute — the 19th minute of the third 45-minute period — with Kennedy Musonda converting.
The result provides both sides with another useful workout ahead of the Transitional League, which begins with the Charity Shield this weekend.
However, competitive league action will only get underway on 3 October.
The Transitional League has been split into two streams based on teams’ finishing positions from the previous season.
The Odd Positions Stream comprises reigning champions Power Dynamos, FC MUZA, Nchanga Rangers, ZANACO, Konkola Blades, Kansanshi Dynamos, Nkana, NAPSA Stars, FC Leopards, Makeni All Stars and Trident.
The Even Positions Stream features ABSA Cup winners Red Arrows, Kabwe Warriors, Green Eagles, Mufulira Wanderers, Zesco United, Green Buffaloes, Nkwazi, Mutondo Stars, Chirundu United and Roan United.
For Nkana and Zesco, Thursday’s extended encounter offered valuable match minutes as the two sides build towards the resumption of competitive football in October.
