Mpumalanga Black Aces striker Collins Mbesuma says he has not yet given up on reaching 20 goals for the season, insisting “anything can happen”.
The Zambian forward has been in fine form this season, netting 14 goals across all competitions, yet it seems time is running out to reach the lucrative 20-goal mark for the campaign.
Yet with Aces scheduled to play at least six more matches across all competitions this season, Mbesuma – who holds the PSL record for 25 goals in one season – insists his initial target is still within reach.
“I cannot say much about that target (of 20 goals) being reached because anything can happen in football,” he says. “You can score five goals in one game. What I believe in is that you must hold on until the last game so for now I have keep fighting.
“As a striker you cannot give up,” he continues. “You can even score eight goals in one game, you understand. Anything is possible. As a striker don’t give up early. Never give up until the last game.
“I am still playing, so I am also still fighting to break that record as well. You can’t really say who will break that record as only God knows. We are blessed in different ways so for now I will continue working.”
AmaZayoni have however dropped 20 points from the 27 that have been available in the last nine league games, leaving them 15 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, with their skipper insisting that the team comes first before his individual accolades.
“I am thinking more for the team because it is not good to have the team struggling,” he said. “I cannot be focusing on the goals that I have scored when the team is not winning. For now we have to fix by making sure that we start winning games. So for now the focus is on the team because we need to start winning games.
“As a striker your job is always to score goals, but you have to understand that this must not mean that it must always be about you,” he continued. “This is about the team. If you are scoring goals but the team is not doing well, then how is that of benefit to the team? The performance of the team should be at the same level as the goals that you are scoring.
“As a striker it is good to be seeing your name at the top there, but that should not be more important than the team’s success.”
Aces’ next game is against off-form Kaizer Chiefs next week Tuesday.

Well said King David
ok I understand.
Zamfoot just a small correction, there are 7 more games in the league to play plus another 3 if Aces can make it to the final of the Telkom. At the very least they actually have eight more games to play not six.
If Mbesuma has to reach 20 goals he will have to have a ratio of a goal a game till the end of the season. A rather big ask but it is definitely achievable. The last player in the PSL to have a ratio of a goal a game was another Zambian star, Christopher Katongo who scored 15 goals in 15 games in the 2006/2007 season. He won the golden boot that year despite only playing half of the season.
