  1. OFF TOPIC :

Football Association of Zambia president Andrew Kamanga has slammed reports that he was about to pick a low profile Asian-based sports apparel company to kit Chipolopolo.

News has been doing the rounds on social media that Kamanga’s regime had failed to secure a high-profile sports apparel firm to kit the national team and opted for an option from Asia who current kit FAZ Super Division side Nkana.

“I think there has been a lot of speculation that we have signed up with MAFRO,” Kamanga told media on Monday in Lusaka.

“The correct position is that we have not signed up with anybody. MAFRRO approached FAZ in February this year and once there was a change of administration they came back.

“Their proposal is in but we have not yet looked at as an executive so it may be a while before any decision is made.

“In any case I just wanted to also explain because there has been speculation that we have failed bring back Nike but the truth of the matter is that the Nike issue was conclusively finalized in 2014 because the contract came to an end and the previous executive did not renew it.

“In fact when we came in I made follow ups with Nike and they were very categorical that it is not going to possible for us to get Nike back simply because whatever position they had has changed.

” They can only clothe two teams in Africa so they had two slots one belonged to South Africa and the other one was with Zambia so once we had refused to sign they ended up giving that slot to Nigeria.

“So the truth of the matter is we cannot get Nike back so let us be fair as we report. It has nothing to do with our administration it was a dead matter. We are hopeful that whenever these slots open up we may be able to convince them and get back.

“Others have accused us of not even considering Adidas who as you know Adidas is an official sponsor of FIFA itself. We may or may not but we have written to Adidas as well.

“It is on record we have had no response. Others have talked about Puma it is the same story like Nike they have limited alocations for this year it is not possible to be considered even next year.

“So if you look at those three as your top kit sponsors it is almost impossible that we will have any chance of getting one of those.

“But with Nike the only window available now is for us to be buying, it is no longer a sponsorship but we will now be the ones paying for whatever we need. So will now be forced to pay as opposed to being paid because we do not have a sponsorship deal.

“We have already identified a couple of other international kit manufacturers who we are going to continue talking to and at the right time we are going to make a decision and you will all be informed.

“So nobody has signed with MAFRO and that is where the story ends and I just hope that we do not spend too much effort on things which do not exist.”

  2. Those boys who present soccer chat on qfm went to town about this non existent marfra deal calling Kamanga and his executive all sorts of names and trying to discredit the process of getting the donated bus to Zambia ! we all know they have been anti Kamanga all along but surely they should just deal with the positives as first priority other than trying to discredit Kamanga and company. Those were cheap shots Emmanuel Zite Tembo !

  3. OFF TOPIC:

FOOTBALL Association of Zambia president Andrew Kamanga says he is the only person with the legal mandate to appoint a general secretary. And Kamanga says the national team will face Togo in friendly game on May 27 before playing Guinea Bissau in a crucial 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Meanwhile, Kamanga says FAZ had not yet signed a kit deal for the national team with any company. Addressing the press at Football House yesterday, Kamanga said the new general secretary would be appointed next Friday during the executive meeting. “We have an executive committee meeting next Friday and the appointment of the general secretary is an agenda item. It’s only the FAZ president who has the legal mandate to propose a name to the committee. So whether it has been done through interviews or otherwise, I will be the only one and I am the only one authorised by the constitution to make that proposal. No one else other than the president. So I can assure you come next week Friday, the general secretary will be appointed and he will be appointed by me as the one proposing,” Kamanga said. Kamanga said he hoped other FAZ executive members would support his choice of general secretary in line with the FAZ constituion. “If the name is presented and then rejected then I will make a decision there and then because I am the only one that can make a decision. So I hope my colleagues will support whatever name that I propose,” he said. And Kamanga said the Chipolopolo boys would camp in West Africa ahead of the match against Guinea Bissau. “Once we play the friendly, the team will remain there for camping and continue with preparations,” Kamanga said. On the national team kit, Kamanga said the association had not signed any deal with Mafro. He said Mafro approached FAZ in February over the possible deal and a proposal had come which the association had not yet looked at. “There have been a lot of speculations. But the correct position is that we have not signed up with anybody. Mafro approached FAZ in February this year and once there was a change of administration they came back and a proposal has come in and we haven’t even looked at it as an executive. So it may be a while before any decision is made. We have already identified a couple of other international kit manufacturers who we will continue talking to. At the right time the decision will be made. So nobody had signed with Mafro and the story ends there,” he said. Kamanga said the deal with Nike was the talk of the past as it was conclusively finalised in 2014 because the contract came to an end and was not renewed by the previous executive. He revealed that FAZ buys kit directly from Nike in the absence of a contract. “But it will now be us paying for whatever we need. We are being forced to pay as opposed to us being paid by Nike because we don’t have a sponsorship deal,” said Kamanga. He said Nike together with Puma had limited allocation to Africa while FAZ had also approached Adidas for possible deal. Kamanga yesterday left for the FIFA congress in Mexico in the company of acting general secretary Katongo Kabungo and treasurer Rix Mweemba.

    • Pink Frog. Thanks for the info. So now Amos Mumba and a few of the other guys can rest easy. I was not a fan of the deal, but I honestly thought it is time to make something happen. Its a very big shame that we have lost our deal with Nike. They produced the very best Zambia jerseys I have seen in a very long time. Adidas would be awesome too.

  4. Sir yo articles r too long i’ll hv 2 eat supper first 2 finish’em otherwize nalaponena pakati lol
…..and this Kamanga guy needs sum dosage of confidence,he doesn’t sound confident.#JustSaying

  5. Why is Zambia as a football nation finding it difficult to get kit sponsorship? The answer is very simple, World Cup qualification is the key because thats the only way to advertise their kits to the whole world not COSAFA cups.Thank you

    • I would agree that it definitely gives Kit Sponsors more incentive and would probably land Zambia an amazing deal. The real problem which was highlighted by some stories is that making jerseys for Zambia is not very lucrative investment because of illegal replicas which essentially bring down the profits significantly.

You have to remember that kit sponsors don’t do this out of the goodness of their hearts. There are dollars to be made.
