Zambian forward Gamphani Lungu has expressed his delight after experiencing his first Soweto Derby, which ended in a memorable victory for his Orlando Pirates side against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
The Buccaneers secured a crucial 2-1 victory over 10-man Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday to move to the summit of the Betway Premiership standings.
Lungu featured in the second half after coming off the bench at the interval to replace Nkosikhona Ndaba, playing the final 45 minutes of the fiercely contested encounter.
The Zambian took to Facebook to reflect on the occasion, describing the atmosphere as electric and the victory as an added bonus to an already special experience.
“My first Soweto Derby! What an experience to be part of such an electric atmosphere. Getting the win was definitely a bonus and made it even more special,” he wrote.
Lungu also praised the team’s collective effort and performance while expressing gratitude to the coaching staff for their continued confidence in him.
“Proud of the team’s effort and performance. A big thank you to the coach for the continued trust and belief in us and what we are capable of,” he added.
The forward further acknowledged the support he has received from Pirates supporters, thanking them for their messages, prayers and encouragement.
“To the fans, the messages, prayers and constant encouragement mean a lot to me. I’ll never take your love for granted. I truly appreciate you all.
“We keep pushing!”
Pirates claimed all three points through goals from Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi, while Pule Mmodi scored Chiefs’ consolation goal.
The victory lifted the Buccaneers to the top of the standings with 25 points, two ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, while Chiefs remained fifth on 14 points.
Chiefs finished the contest with 10 men after Inacio Miguel was sent off in stoppage time following a second yellow card for a foul on Lungu.
For the Zambian forward, his first taste of one of African football’s most celebrated rivalries ended on a high note, with Pirates claiming derby bragging rights and top spot in the league.
