Lawrence Mulenga to start ahead of Francis Mwansa and Toaster Nsabata

In just over 45 hours, the Chipolopolo will kick off their campaign at the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Zambia’s game on Wednesday evening will be played at the Laurent Pokou Stadium and will kick off at 22:00 hours (Zambian Time).

Coach Avram Grant will look to field his strongest side as he hopes to start the tournament with a positive result.

Power Dynamos goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga is expected to start between the sticks ahead of Toaster Nsabata and Francis Mwansa.

Mulenga started in goal in the friendly against Cameroon and was also in goal in the 2-1 loss to Niger.

The Blue Bullets product seems to have settled as the first choice for the 2012 AFCON winners.

Green Buffaloes goalkeeper Francis Mwansa is another option for Grant.

After controversy over his selection, Mwansa came to the party in the 2023 COSAFA Championship semifinal clash against South Africa on his competitive debut.

Mwansa did well and showed composure as he helped Zambia to a 2-1 win over arch rivals Bafana Bafana.

Mwansa then went on to keep a clean sheet in the final as Zambia beat Lesotho 1-0 to win a record seventh title.

The third option is Toaster Nsabata who when Grant started his reign as Chipolopolo boss ten months and Nsabata was given the nod ahead of Forest Rangers goalkeeper Allan Chibwe and Lawrence.

However 33 minutes into that match, Nsabata made a blunder that saw the Likuena take the lead after he failed to deal with a Tsoarelo Bereng long range free kick.

With Nsabata almost in tears, Patson Daka and Emmanuel Banda went to comfort their former Nchanga Rangers teammate.

Nsabata has also had some very decent shifts for Chipolopolo in a number of games and was at some point the clear choice between the sticks.

Chipolopolo will face Tanzania in their second game on Sunday. Zambia’s final group match will be against the Atlas Lions on January 24.
