Rachael Kundananji’s Bay FC suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat against Kansas City Current on Saturday in round five of the NWSL League match away to Kansas City.
Kundananji, who was making her third appearance for her new club since joining in February, was partnered in the attack with Nigerian international Asisat Oshoala and Tess Boade as they looked to build on their 3-2 win over Seattle Reign FC in week four.
But their plans were quickly dashed. The home side stormed out of the gates, grabbing two opening goals from Bia Zaneratto and Bayley Feist in the 2nd and 6th minute respectively.
The visitors eventually settled in, with Kundananji causing problems for the Kansas City defense. She won a corner in the 17th minute, which resulted in a consolation goal by Kayla Sharples’ well-headed effort, taking the tie 2-1 into halftime.
The second half mirrored the first. The home side capitalized on a break in play, with Malawian international Temwa Chawinga scoring twice in quick succession for her third and fourth of the season in the 56th and 62nd minutes. Bia Zaneratto then added another goal for Kansas City in the 73rd minute.
Bay FC could only manage another consolation 12 minutes from time, with Tess Boade getting on the scoresheet.
Despite Kundananji’s impressive performance, her hard work couldn’t pay off to add on her debut goal. The night belonged to Temwa Chawinga and Bia Zaneratto, who each bagged a brace in the match.
