Kaunda’s fledglings set for U17 debut against Guinea

Zambia Under-17 take on Guinea in a Group B opener of the Niger 2015 African Under-17 Championship on Sunday in Niamey, Niger.

Sunday’s opener will see Zambia make it’s bow at this level after years of frustrations for failing to qualify.

In Chris Kaunda, Zambia has another Dutch trained coach with a UEFA A licence. The other one Kalusha Bwalya while Chipolopolo Boys coach Honour Janza has the same qualifications even though he is an instructor.

Kaunda, is set to stick to high pressing Dutch game though the formation will differ as he prefers a more traditional British/Zambian 4-4-2 over the KNVB taught 4-3-3.

There’s also history between the two sides with Guinea dumping out arguably one of Zambia’s talented youth sides in 2005 when a side including Rainford Kalaba, Clifford Mulenga, Dominic Yobe, Ignitius Lwipa and Jacob Mulenga lost on aggregate to the West African.

Though Kalaba missed a penalty at Sunset Stadium in the first leg, then coach Simataa Simataa said ‘I won’t blame the Kalaba but Zambians will remember this boy as he is special talent’ as Zambia failed to qualify.

Slightly a decade after that, Kalaba is now a legend and one boy who can emulate the master is Kafue Celtic’s Patson Daka.

The Under-17 skipper will lead the line and will be supported by Pumulo Sianga upfront.

For those watching on television all eyes will be on Chililabombwe born and Lusaka Youth Academy’s Ngosa Sunzu, a last minute inclusion in the team as replacement for the injured Changwe Kalale.

Ngosa is the young brother of Stoppila and Felix Sunzu Jr.

Partnering Ngosa in midfield will be another Celtic’s Musonda Siame as the creative and attacking midfielder. On the flanks Kaunda will hope Chambishi born and bred ‘Computer’ Mwepu will come to the party.

Off the bench, Kaunda could also unleash one diminutive player they have been calling the ‘new Kalaba’ to come and add spark to the team.

  1. Off topic.
…………..”Without the manager we would have won nothing,” Ivory Coast captain Toure added. “He made things difficult for me. He told me if I didn’t run he’d kick me out. He’s fantastic.”

  2. I can assure you scouts at Barcelona and man United will be at this tournament. With the new financial fair play rules clubs in europe are no longer spending heaps to buy players instead the war is now at youth level. Clubs are now fighting transfer battles at youth level. Patson daka will be one of the first to be bought

  3. From Sao paulo to accra these scouts of these top European clubs are fighting a serious battle for the best talent in the world. As I said with the financial fair play you can’t spend much anymore you need to go for youth quickly. Don’t be surprised if you hear rumours that patson daka’s father is being offered 100,000 pounds and a house to get his son to sign for a big club in europe. This is what is happening now

  4. I find it pathetic that Zambians rely on super sport pay TV to televise their games. Where is our national television provider and what about if your are abroad why can’t they put games online. It’s pathetic how things are going.

  5. What amazes me is how our under 17 and under 20 dismantle southern African teams at cosafa but flop at continental level. What is wrong with us? After watching evans Kangwa at afcon 2015 I see an average striker. But is this not the same kangwa that dismantled teams in cosafa under 20. Let’s see how our juniors perform at continental level.
