HERE IS THE FULL PRESIDENT’S CORNER: Our AFCON Bound Teams Deserve to be the Main Focus in 2025

Football felicitations to you, the lovers of the beautiful game. It is such an exciting season with our under-17 Women National Team marching on the Morocco 2025 FIFA Women World Cup qualifiers against Tanzania on March 9 in Dare-sa-laam and seven days later in Ndola. Having been at the 2024 U-17 FIFA Women World Cup in the Dominican Republic we are more than focused on not just ensuring that the ladies make it back-to-back on the world stage but returning to make an impact.

We have set very high standards not just for the region but the continent on the women’s front as many nations are reaching out to tap into our magic formula. We have embedded in our 10-year strategic plan a coherent strategy that seeks to take our women’s game to the pinnacle of the global stage. There will be another round after the second round before any team can seal their ticket for the tournament. Africa will have five representatives at the 2025 edition with host Morocco joined by four other teams.

The Copper Queens kicked off their preparations for the Morocco 2025 Women Africa Cup of Nations with two international friendly matches against the Scorchers of Malawi. It was good to see both teams bringing their globally recognized stars to test each other at the Reiz Arena. The second part of preparations for WAFCON will be a Six-Nation tournament to be hosted by Zambia in May where the top teams on the continent will be participating. Having won bronze at the last edition we will be gunning for the trophy in July. At the rate our Copper Queens are flying, they will be hard to stop at the WAFCON and hopefully we will be fittingly crown this golden generation with glory.

On the men’s side of business, the Chipolopolo will be in Moscow on March 25 to play Russia in an international friendly match. Considering Zambia may not be in action in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers as Eritrea withdrew while Congo Brazzaville remains suspended by FIFA we opted to organize a friendly match for the Chipolopolo to keep them engaged. It is important to ensure that all the teams that qualified for the various Africa cups are adequately prepared. In this score, we encourage all our stakeholders to invest their energy in this huge undertaking. In 2025, this should the main preoccupation of every football loving Zambian to make sure that the five teams that qualified for the Africa cups are prepared adequately and given maximum support.

The under-17 boys are also in camp for the Africa Cup of Nations which kicks off in the next few weeks in Morocco. We already gave them international exposure at the Four Nations tournament in Morocco where they played Senegal, Egypt and Morocco. We will give them an international camp in the period preceding the tournament as we have always done in my tenure.

Finally, preparations for the 2025 elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) remain on course with provincial elections running from March 15-27. With the Appeals Committee providing the final candidates’ list, the way is clear now for participants to offer their manifestos. The Appeals Committee rulings were a true testament of the independence of our judicial bodies which attribute anchors our leadership.

Surprisingly, there has been very little investment in candidates offering what they can do for the game other than slander and mudslinging. We hope the councilors will be treated more to football discourse in the coming days to ensure that anyone offering themselves for leadership aims to better our beautiful game and not aim to advance long held personal ambitions. Our football deserves better.

Have a productive week!
