Kalaba to start for Mazembe in Champions League final

Zambian midfield maestro Rainford Kalaba is expected to start TP Mazembe’s CAF Champions League 1st leg away tie against Algerien side USM Algiers on Saturday.

The 29 year will be joined in attack by Tanzanian duo Samatta Mbwana and Ulimwengu while Given Singuluma, winner of the 2010 edition is likely to watch from the stands.

Midfielder Nathan Sinkala and defender Kabaso Chongo should be content with a place on bench in Marakech.

The Lubumbashi side will host the North Africans in a return leg in a fortnight.

Should Mazembe win the competition then Kalaba and Sinkala will join France based defender Stoppila Sunzu as the only Zambians to have won both
the African Cup of Nations and CAF Champions League.

Singuluma and Sunzu have been to Champions League twice, with the former going on to play at the FIFA Club World Cup final against then Samuel Eto’o Inter Milan in 2010.

  1. Looks like its not TP Mazambia anymore. Only one Zambian player able to hold down a first team spot these days. It has slowly developed into TPmaGhana. All the best to TP and Pirates, they should do the region proud and win both cups.

  2. Could it be possible that the reason Katumbi did not sell Kalaba to Lille is because he needed Rainford for the CAF championship? And once they are done he will let him move to Lille in the January window…..? This is what i suspect the deal was, i just really do not believe Rainford would give up the chance to play in Ligue 1 at this stage in his career to continue playing more or less no names in the DRC league…..! I would not be surprised at all if this is the deal that was made in the summer…..BUT THEN AGAIN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ZAMBIAN PLAYERS AND AMBITION.

Why would one pass up the chance to play for a coach who holds you in high esteem and would probably guarantee you a walk into the starting 11….. If the captain of the national team is not ambitious, then what about the rest of his teammates that he captains….? Zamfoot, any thoughts or inside intel……?

  3. ivory coast beats ghana 1:0 in CHAN qualifier. ghana is out no CHAN for them beaten by a team that is a customer to zambia in football

  4. Ivory Coast qualified to 2016 CHAN after beating Ghana 1 nil.they lost 2 goals to 1 in Ghana but qualify on away goal rule.

  5. I feel for Given singuluma these days he is always on the bench how I wish he can maka move a or in south africa that is if they is an offer

    • Lwenu nama failures thoughts. Zambia defeated 3 West African teams on their way to the AFCON maiden title. What more proof do you want that we are equal to the challenge?

Inaugural CHAN didn’t we bash the host country CIV 4 – 0. Didn’t we defeat the same CIV on our way to CHAN Rwanda?

It starts with you and ends with the players

      • so all of a sudden pundits here have found their foul mouths to pass comments on Ghana’s elimination from CHAN qualifiers even though it isnt the topic under discussion,i now believe it was like a hot knife through a fragile butter when news of Ghana successes was been posted here by AL gaddafi that prompted infantile comments of rebuff for such news to be posted on ghanasoccernet, but now Ghana’s failure is been trumpeted and CELEBRATED in the whole of zambia, how childish and myopic.we shall return on this site but in a MATURED and ACADEMIC style.

  6. Zambia under 23 recently knocked out ivory Coast from the olympics so what do you mean zambia can’t qualify from West Africa. On kabaso Chongo he’s a monster of a full back he did very well containing neymar when zambia played brazil. Once he plays more regular for zambia he will be in the TP starting line up and may well move to Europe

    • This is what i expect from a football fanatic like you and with no reservations will say keep it up. Be critical or supportive all you want, its your right – but no insults, demeaning words and degrading people’s statuses.

Now back to the topic, on Kabaso i agree with you but mostly his inconsistencies have been his undoing. It should be the other way round that when he starts performing for Mazembe then he will command a regular place in the national team.

  7. Dont dout kabaso i dont know y he is not used much but he has caurage nd stregth to mark any striker give this guy chance he ii b our best diffender, on kalaba its better he stays at 29 going to europe he haslived his youthfullnes in futball he is not amoung the future, the future is lubambo

  8. Ghana out of Chan is no news. I am personally happy we are out. Else this group of players would all get contracts outside the country and a mass exodus of growing talents outside which we would need to build our league. Secondly we would not have to search for funds to pay another group whiles have not settled the womens team yet. Above all we need to concentrate on the world cup qualification and the african cup of Nation. Enough football activity year round.

  9. @ chu that’s the cheapest excuse ever, you were just beaten square. I’d think you needed not to participate in the qualifiers had that been a true projection

    • @ Chifwa Sc. People are not even aware we played the Ivory Coast. This group of players we have cant make it to a team C of Blackatars if we were to have one. WELL YOU CAN WIN THIS ONE IF YOU want but I think playing CHAN for the top Continental teams is waste of money but we wld be missed though

  10. Lol john is so pathetic though, his still talking about the game that happened 10 years ago when chongo contained neymar…what abt his recent games, good players are consistent or they come out of their hurdles quickly…stop overhyping zed players, this is what’s killing our players.you guys praise them so hard and they think they are world beaters

  11. Recently sate sate has joined Lierse SK,dude scored 1 goal in 23 games and he was praised like he earned the move…this is simply a loan guys, wadi degla is a big team in egypt n sate sate couldnt crack it there…

    • Boss, note that Sate Sate was being played as a right winger (not his familiar central striking role) in Egypt where he consistently played games very good assists. Indeed it’s a loan move but to a better team in Belgium where with hard work he can only improve even better. Reminds me of Kalu (A terrific dribbling wizard at Mighty in the early to mid 80s) left Zambiaa and was converted to a midfilder-cum striker at Cercle Bruges and some soccer “fans” claiming he finished just because he wasn’t the dribbler we. Knew but the rest is history as they say!

  12. Kabaso is up against a very quick and offensive Ghanaian player for the right back position….This guy is red hot these days. He contributed to assists in TP’s win over the tough Sudanese in the semis.

  13. oooh my word what a goal by Kalaba, which Kavin Evans think was speculative well i disagress with the commentetor i remember watching Kalaba score a goal of the same at the Cosafa U20 which was nominated for Caf awards for goal of the season, hence he meant it and scored period.
