ZESCO Ndola Girls head coach William Zulu has reaffirmed his belief in his team following the unveiling of the groups for the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League| COSAFA Qualifiers.
The Eden University Women’s Super League Champions have been placed in Group A alongside former continental Champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, Ntopwa of Malawi and Beauties of Namibia.
Zulu believes his team has what it takes to achieve what they want and will do their talking on the pitch.
Sundowns have never lost a match outright in this competition. Their only defeat came in the 2022 final via penalties to Green Buffaloes. In total, they have played 13 matches, won 11 and drawn two, scoring 52 goals and conceding just four. They did not participate in 2024, having qualified automatically as African champions.
Despite all this history Zulu says his side will play their game and not look at Sundowns’ past glory.
“Football is played on the pitch, so I believe in my girls. We’ll go there, work hard, and achieve what we want to achieve. It’s a plus to play Sundowns. We’ll go there and play our game, without looking at their past record,” he said.
The Zegalicious Girls will be making their debut at the regional showpiece after winning the Eden University Women’s Super League with an unbeaten record.
They have been busy with preparations and have played five friendly matches already.
They beat Indeni Roses 4-0 before playing to a goalless draw with Red Arrows and a 2-2 draw with Elite Ladies. They then handed Choma Warriors a 15-0 bashing before seeing off ZANACO Ladies 4-2.
This coming Sunday they face the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League| COSAFA Qualifiers Champions, Green Buffaloes in the Charity Shield as they continue to fine tune for the tournament.
The CWCL | COSAFA Qualifier will be staged at the University of Johannesburg’s AW Muller Stadium from August 22 to 31, with a record 10 clubs competing for the regional crown.
