Humble Patson Daka plays down his incredible goal haul in AFCON qualifiers

Zambia National team forward Patson Daka has credited teamwork for his phenomenal run in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Redbull Salzburg striker has netted five times despite missing three matches. Daka played down his incredible goal haul saying he was just found at the right place at the right time.

“It’s not very important for me, I could have not done it alone, it was a team effort. If my friends were not there to support me, I wouldn’t have done it. I give the credit to the team,” Daka said.

“We played as a team and helped each other at the end of the day. I was just found at the right place, at the right time, to be the person to help the team,” he added.

The 21-year-old’s brace on Monday night propelled Zambia  to a 2-nil win over Zimbabwe. He also scored another brace against Algeria on Sunday in the 3-all thriller. Both goals were spot kicks.

Earlier in the qualifiers, Daka scored arguably his best goal in Chipolopolo colors. He showed grit, pace and power to pull one back for Zambia in the 2-1 home defeat to Zimbabwe last year in the first leg of the ‘The Battle of Zambezi’.

Daka has been linked with a host of English Premier League top sides including Tottenham Hotspurs, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City and West Ham United.

The goal machine however says he does not concentrate on the rumors but just playing his game.

“For me, I only concentrate on playing football. That’s what am good at. Whatever speculations come, I don’t really pay attention because I know that my agent is there to do the work. I don’t really pay attention to what the media say.” Daka said.

“Rumours will always be there. If you are doing well, they will always be there. For me, I always try by all means to work every game,” he said.

“For example, in today’s game they won’t count it next time. I really have to keep my consistency and do well in every game to make sure that I continue to help the team in every possible way,” he added.

“My target has always been the same since I started playing football. It is to always help the team. I don’t have to concentrate a lot on the future because my future is today. What I do today will determine my future,” Daka concluded.

Daka has netted a astounding 27 goals and contributed 8 assists in 31 appearances in all competitions for his club, Redbull Salzbu
