Guest article: The sad state of affairs at Buildcon

So already-relegated Team Koppala failed to pitch up for their weekend fixture against Kansanshi Dynamos at Lumwana Stadium in Lumwana to fuel talk of financial instabilities at the club.

Having arrived on the scene as AM Welding from Choma in 2017 and later rebranded as Buildcon and relocated to Ndola, the club is solely owned by businessman Moses Mubanga.

Upon their arrival, Buildcon had one of the most expensively assembled squad in MTN Super League history.

Buildcon have over the years managed to bring marquee signings from across Africa and locally with notable names including Chisamba Lungu, Lameck Banda, Kings Kangwa, Brian Mwila and Moses Phiri among others.

It is safe to say Buildcon is one of the clubs that raise the standards in Zambian league football as they added to its competitiveness and value.

And to qualify for continental football within just two years is no minor achievement.

Hence, I feel it is really saddening for Zambian football to lose such a great source of competition at this critical point when we are trying to get our club football to the pinnacle of African football.

Most notably for Team Koppala has been the professionalism exhibited by the players and staff.

Despite the many stories of financial constraints at the club, they have acted professional when out on the field and lost heavily with dignity, something rare!

We can only hope for a much improved situation for the club going ahead.
