Geoffrey Silavwe : The Zambian Itumeleng Khune eyes game time at Green Buffaloes

Geoffrey Silavwe was born on March 28th,1996 in Mufulira a mining town on the Copperbelt which is 100 kilometers away from its provincial capital Ndola. He is the 3rd born in a family of seven.

He embarked on a football playing journey when he joined an amateur outfit called young mighty Mufulira wanderers in 2009 before moving to Ronald Ross a division three side in 2010.

After spending two seasons at Ronald Ross, he secured another move to join Lusaka Tigers who by then were playing in Division One now called EDEN University/FAZ National Division One. After spending a year at the club, his goalkeeping skills with good ball distribution earned him another move to Konkola Mine Police from Chingola who by that time was campaigning in the Super League.

It was at Konkola Mine Police where he proved how good he is and attracted interest from Green Buffaloes an army sponsored side plying its trade in the FAZ Super League who lured him to their team in 2015.

Geoffrey Silavwe has also played for junior Chipolopolo teams. He was part of the Osward Mutapa under 20 tutored side which took part in the 2013 COSAFA championship. He was also part of Hector Chilombo’s mentored side which took part at under 20 AFCON in Senegal,2015.

The Zamfoot crew caught up with Geoffrey Silavwe to discuss about his prospects.

When asked about his best football moment so far during his playing career, he pointed out the two-nil beating of Nkwazi FC in the Barclays cup final as the best.

“My best football moment is when we won the Barclays cup in 2015 after joining the team as you know it is every player’s dream to win the cup and it was a morale booster the fact that it was my first season with the team,” Silavwe said.

He is nicknamed Khune after the Kaizer Chiefs and South Africa national team goal custodian, Itumelang Khune due to his accurate and good ball distribution when on the field of play.

“My teammates saw how I was distributing and passing the ball like Khune, that’s how they started calling me Khune and he is my role model I like the way he distributes the ball,” he said.

At Green Buffaloes, he has been relegated to the second-best in the goalkeeping department for most of the seasons. Despite being the second choice, he is still confident of claiming the first spot in the starting eleven as he says he is working hard during training to convince coach Bilton Musonda to hand him the starting berth in the coming games and has marked it as the first target this season.

I put God first in everything I do, am training hard waiting for a chance to prove myself once been given the chance to play cause at the moment am the second choice

Geoffrey Silavwe has also set a target for his team this season of winning the league and has also set sights of playing football outside Zambia

“As a team, we are looking forward to winning the league this season and I am also aiming high, am not looking at Green Buffaloes only but am also looking forward to playing outside Zambia,” Silavwe told the ZamFoot Crew in an exclusive interview.

Green buffaloes will be in action on Wednesday in week five brought forward encounter against Nkana and three days later will face Nkwazi FC at Edwin Emboela stadium in a week four clash with Geoffrey Silavwe pushing for a start in both games.
