Gamphani Lungu opens PSL goal account in Orlando Pirates win

Zambian utility player Gamphani Lungu opened his South African Premiership goal account for Orlando Pirates as the Buccaneers returned to the top of the table with a 3-0 victory over Chippa United on Sunday.

Lungu produced a moment of individual quality to break the deadlock at Kings Park Stadium, scoring on the hour mark as Pirates put their Betway Premiership title defence back on track.

The 27-year-old collected the ball on the edge of the box, turned away from his marker and unleashed a powerful effort that beat Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

It was Lungu’s second goal since joining the Buccaneers, having previously scored in Pirates’ MTN8 victory over Durban City.

His latest strike, however, was his first in the league and provided the breakthrough in a match that had remained goalless throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Pirates quickly extended their advantage, with defender Lebone Seema heading home from a corner just three minutes after Lungu’s opener.

Second-half substitute Daniel Msendami then completed the scoring in the 88th minute, sealing a comfortable victory for the Buccaneers.

The result moves Pirates to seven points from their opening three league matches and back to the top of the Premiership table.

For Lungu, the goal adds to an encouraging start to life at one of South Africa’s biggest clubs after arriving during the off-season.

The Zambian international’s versatility has made him a useful option for coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, and his latest contribution could further strengthen his case for a regular role as Pirates seek to defend their league title.

Pirates will now switch their attention to cup football, with an MTN8 clash against Sekhukhune United next weekend.
