“From Chibolya to the World; Katongo shares her inspiring journey on Supersport Stories

Copper Queens midfielder Evarine Susan Katongo has opened up about her inspiring rise from the tough streets of Chibolya to representing Zambia at the highest level of women’s football, in a deeply moving feature on SuperSport Stories.

In the latest episode of the acclaimed series, designed to spotlight the human stories behind Africa’s sports stars, Katongo shares her struggles growing up in one of Lusaka’s most infamous neighbourhoods and how her dream of playing football was met with resistance even at home.

“Growing up wasn’t easy. My parents never allowed me to play (football). They believed football was only for men. They would throw away or burn anything I used for training. But I never gave up,” Katongo says.

Her moment of breakthrough came when she received her first call-up to the Zambia Women’s National Team, which was an emotional turning point not just for her, but for her family as well.

“That’s when my parents finally accepted it. They realized they couldn’t stop someone from doing what she loves. Wearing the Zambian jersey for the first time was a dream come true,” Katongo said proudly.

Katongo is now preparing for her second appearance at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where the Copper Queens are drawn in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal, and DR Congo.

For Katongo, the mission in Morocco is clear.

“Last time we came out third. This time, we want to do better, we want to bring the trophy home.”

She believes the key to Zambia’s success lies in the unity and drive within the team.

“What makes this team special is the love and the unity. We push each other, we fight for each other. It’s not just about individual glory; it’s about team spirit,” the Green Buffaloes Women FC midfielder says.

Katongo, who is now a source of pride in her community, hopes her story inspires the next generation of young girls who, like her, may face obstacles on the path to greatness.

“Even those who never believed in me now believe in football. They believe sport can change lives. And I’m proud to be part of that change.”
