Friday Samu’s debut ends in defeat

Friday Samu made his debut for Maritzburg United but was unfortunately on the losing end as the team choice suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Supersport United in the Nedbank Cup round of 32.

Ernst Middendorp named the former Green Buffaloes forward in his starting line up to make his debut after making a switch last month from the Zambia Super League.

On the other side, Kaitano Tembo lined up former National Assembly and Power Dynamos forward Gamphani Lungu in attack in a 3-4-3 formation with Bradley Grobler and Thamsanqa Gabuza all out injured.

Samu had a chance to put the team of choice in the lead but his initial shot was blocked before he forced Ronwen Williams to use his legs to deny him his first goal from a close range follow up in the 74th minute.

A minute later Samu was withdrawn by coach Middendorp and Rowan Lancaster Human taking his place.

Supersport claimed the victory with a late goal long range drive by Iqraam Rayners.

Poor defending from Clayton Daniels and Alfred Ndengane led to Kudakwashe Mahachi and Rayners producing some good interplay before the latter produced a peach of a shot which went into the net, 1-0.

Matsatsantsa held on to win the match and progress to the Nedbank Cup round of 16 with Gamphani Lungu playing the full ninety minutes.
