South African is new Chipolopolo Coach
SOUTH African Gordon George Igesund has been appointed Chipolopolo coach.
A source at Football House confirmed the appointment of Igesund as the new Zambia national team coach.
“Yes I can confirm that we have settled for Igesund for the position of national team coach. Having valued his achievements and vast experience, we hope he will get down to personal terms and help the national team achieve its objectives,” said the source.
And FAZ general secretary Ponga Liwewe, who could not divulge the name of the coach, confirmed that an expatriate coach had been appointed and that he would only announce the name once personal terms and conditions had been concluded.
“We sat on Saturday as an executive committee and we have chosen the coach. So now we are engaging him on issues of personal terms and we hope by Tuesday (tomorrow), we can conclude and that is when I can announce the name,” said Liwewe.
The 60-year-old Igesund was among three coaches that the Football Association of Zambia interviewed last week.
He was an influential coach in South Africa, having managed a number of clubs in the Premier Soccer league (PSL) and being at the helm of Bafana Bafana.
Born in 1956, Igesund played as a striker in his career before taking up the coaching role.
Among teams he has coached include Orlando Pirates (2000- 2001), Santos Cape Town (2001-2002), Ajax Cape Town (2002-2006), Mamelodi Sundowns (2006-2008), Maritzburg United (2008- 2009), Free States Stars (2009-2010) and Maroka Swallows (2010-2012).
In 2014, he was appointed South African national team coach, a position he assumed for two years before he joined SuperSport United from 2014 to January 2016.
As coach, he won four PSL trophies with four different clubs and also bagged the BP Top Eight cup with Pirates and the SAA Super Eight with Sundowns in 2007.

Right, now that Coach Issue is settled it’s time to flip the next folio of preparation. Well done FAZ
Agreed with you. Hoping for better results now going forward.
GI last coached SSU and was fired for failing. Currently he is jobless. So one wonders where these adjectives are coming from. No club wanted expressed interest in him after leaving SSU.
Literally speaking its a broken Ferari in our hands.

When are you going to be settled ?
KU WAYA-WAYAFYE PA ZED I SEE ZAMBIA GOING NO WHERE,CHEAP IS EXPENSIVE.,IF DATS HIS CV,AM TELLING U WE R STILL A LONG WAY,NA village chicken ilifye…Just wait & see…!
Yes george nd zesco nayo nayo mudala apa manje ni whit chabe
honestly,am nt happy wit a south african coach.faz wud hav settled fo any european coach, even fo dat french coach who ws th first to get interviewed.
Lets see what he can do. Given the circus we have been subjected to so far by FAZ, I think this is a safe choice for them
Igesund also did very well when he was the manager for Manning Rangers. This is where he ‘wrote’ the first chapter of his good history as manager in South African soccer with Zambian striker Rodger Lupiya doing the business for him at that club.
The good thing is that Zambia will learn from him how South Africa is managing to have programmes that encourage young players running.
Sly, Igesund does not believe in youth and very well known for disorganizing good formation. Zambia is the only country in Southern Africa that players entertaining soccer. Zambia has a pattern of discernment falls back to the days of Godfrey Chitalu and Igesund will quickly destroy all that.
The only club where Igesund truly succeeded is at Manning Rangers. Yes, he may have won cups at Sundowns, Santos and Orlando Pirates but he left these teams in disarray and some even took much longer to recover. I hope this does not happen to the Zambian football. I am Zambian born with Malawian parents but South African citizen and Zambia still remains my favourite team with Godfrey Chitalu as my favourite Zambian player of all time.
ponga at work, so out of 20 + coaches we hv settled for this man
@ Sly yet it is supposed to be.ither countries.learning from Zambia. Am not impressed either with the choice. He lamentably failed to Manage Bafana Bafana. He is a good club Coach. Lwandamina might be better than him.
I agree with you…. This guy failed to manage Bafana Bafana
other countries…..
He’s never convinced me dat he z a good coach.
He’s a safe bet, He’s African and understands issue like delayed salaries, poor infrastructure etc. A European will resign in the middle of a match
There is some level of sense in your statement Bwana Pungwa.
Wrong choice
Baponga you are paying back to southafrica. Its your wish not zambias.SHAME
Un expected decision.
South african i doubt how has s.a benefited from his services maybe a local coach is even better than him,
we shall see.
I think he likes pushing people from the touchline. That’s very good for Zambians. But he has to show he believes in them before he starts pushing, then it will work. Good choice! Theatrical Gordon Igesund, i cant wait to see get started. VIVA SA! VIVA! No problem for me.
How are you going to pay him?
Wrong choice. Kapena ni nkhani ya khobili.
Ngatulemyeba ati Bakamanga and the his team has failed mulepanga icongo ati let give him chance. settling for igesund is total madness to the fullest. are you sure igesund is the best man? why not go for troussier or maybe reverting to DARIO BONNETTI..KUCULA CULAFYE BAKAMANGA BENA
This was a choice made well before even interviews were conducted.Ponga Liwewe’s recomendation masked under some long winding, resource wasting interviews!Lets hope the gamble works out well.
Hahaha Ba Mumba, I hate to say I actually agree with you – it smells like that !
Igesund failed bafana bafaba
I smell Ponga all over this decision
PONGA AND KAMANGA ARE USELESS?We shall loose everything in football now with these idiots. This ponga is paying back South africa for staying there at the expense of the entire zambians .
surely he is not the best coach for me to coach the mighty Zambia. the guy he failed to coach bafana bafana. anyway let us wait and see.
there are many factors attached to selecting a coach;his salary and other personal terms. it true he may not be the best, but given the current financial situation, and the need to urgently relieve overloaded George,he is better than ‘nothing’.thats how i understand this decision.its a questio of what we can afford.remember GRZ isnt paying him,its 100% FAZ.
I agree with you.We can only hope for the best in the same way we gambled on Renard.
Chchine ubunga kulinganya namenshi
I don’t know wheather it is a right choice but I will just wait and see this is ponga doing his thing
I never also thought Faz Could settle for Igesund, however choices are made out of considering a number of factors. This choice could have come as result of Govt.’s partial contribution to the salary of the coach or other factors that go with hiring of a new coach.Let us give Igesund a chance and see what he can do even if he does not seem to have a quality track record.Above all,Wedson Nyirenda could be a quality addition to the technical bench.Pliz Kalu worshipers stop finger pointing and spreading falsehood against the new FAZ. Let Ponga and Kamanga Work in peace.
Ma rubbish ponga knows igesund and look at the people who were interviwing the coaches. We had fred mwila there, that another friend to ponga ,so stop bluffing that its financial incapacity that led to settle for this wine stinking coach bluh bluh ,its ponga’s time so let him do his thing and I dont know why the hell he criticised kalu so much when kalu is wiser than the two of them (ponga and kamanga). They are putting 15M zambians at risk of dying of HEART ATTACK.
Kensplash, I think ka track record kaliko impressive, although it was mostly at club level. I would say rational decision by Ponga. Check his profile below :
Gordon Igesund poised to take over as Zambia coach
It would also mean Igesund will land a job he was first touted for 15 years ago when he was sounded out over a caretaker role with Zambia in 2001.
Gordon Igesund’s representatives are to hold talks with the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) as the former South Africa coach is poised to take over the reigns of Chipolopolo.
Igesund is the number one choice of FAZ for their vacant national team post‚ but reports that he had been appointed already are jumping the gun.
His representative Mike Makaab is to discuss personal terms with the Zambian association and if they come to an agreement it will mean a return to international football for Igesund after his contract with the South African Football Association was not renewed in August 2014.
It would also mean Igesund will land a job he was first touted for 15 years ago when he was sounded out over a caretaker role with Zambia in 2001.
Makaab has confirmed that Igesund was interviewed by FAZ‚ but would not comment further.
Other coaches short-listed for the post include former Ghana tactician Goran Stevanovic‚ Frenchman Sebastein Desabre and Swiss national Raoul Savoy.
Igesund has been out of a job since he was axed by SuperSport United in January.
He is one of the most successful coaches in South African after winning four league titles with four different sides‚ including unfashionable Manning Rangers and Santos.
He also lifted the league trophy with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
He finished runner-up in the league as well with Ajax Cape Town and Moroka Swallows‚ after which he was appointed Bafana coach in 2012 after several near misses in the past.
He failed to qualify the side for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and also exited from the 2013 African Nations Cup finals at the quarterfinal stage on home soil.
His finest moment came in a 1-0 friendly win over then world champions Spain.
That is a wrong man for job …u dnt even need to stress for reasons…why even explain ma rubbish …
Give the man a chance if he is hired and personal terms are agreed upon, for whatever its worth, this guy is step higher than clueless Lwandamina or Janza or any other Zambian local coach. This guy will select players based on merit not favors expecting the player to chekako after they get a contract.
Yes moreover the decision has already been made, we can’t be all happy. Needless to say, Zambia (FAZ) has had serious financial constrains for the past decades were hiring of coaches is concerned. That should make one to understand that we cannot get whichever coach we so desire.
The problem with us Zambians always rush to conclusions and start pointing fingers before anything happens. Zambia is different from Bafana bafana. Didn’t HR fail in Angola then came and engineered Zambia to AFCON victory? To all those refusing to give HR credit for winning AFCON..keep it to yourselves, I don’t want to hear it. Igesund will be respected by our players and hopefully he is supported by our government and corporate world(financially) so that he can deliver the desired results.
TC you are 100% correct before the guy even starts his job you have already conclud we are already on his neck. We always like to complain we have no patience at all. Tekeni fitalale mwebantu.
What a choice fails to inspire confidence! I hope his advisers read the comments he must decline Job we need a strong candidate to build confidence levels among soccer fans which is already at an all time low
This guy failed at Bafana Bafana. How do we expect him to right this sinking ship?
Not a gud trainer for zambia he falled bafana. Club foot is diff from national team i guess its money this man wants to proove nd get exp at this level but our local trainers full time can be better eg wadawada etc
Guys dont criticise everything. This guy has great knowledge of Zambian football having worked mostly in Southern African.
If he failed to manage South African national team, the reason is simple, South Africa has no talent.
This guy has alot of potential, good sense of humor and good communication skills which we have missed in most coaches.
Lwandamina is a quiet coach and very stubborn with his decisions, Herve renard was very harsh and rude to players, dario bonneti had commmunication problems with the players. This guy is a good fit for chipolopolo
Coaches always fail at one assignment and shines at another. The special one failed at CHELSEA but is the celebrated one at Man U.Give him chance and see what happens.
I dont agree with you chief. Look at the track record of the special one, he also didnt fail at Chelsea. If you are good you are good
I will only judge him after the upcoming games.
zambia
Fyabupubafye, am even regreting having advocated for Chicken to go, I pray he proves me wrong.
For Now we must all support our new Coach this could the beginning of his and Zambia’s International Glory … Shalom
Goeing for worsing than we expect
This is the worst appointment FAZ has ever made. Goin 4 the cheapest the Zambian way coz this igesund guy has a vast experience in givin EXCUSES than SUCCESS ask Bafana.#Scandal
How much money have you donated to FAZ so far to help with the coach’s salary??
I worry that the new adminstration is playing too safe. There is time to play safe and there is a time go for it. It is not a question of understanding Zambian football already, it is a question of vision for football. Our players will be best when they are challenged and pushed to the limit. The most important requirement is the ability to manage an african national team and their style and technic – tactic they will bring. Was Igesund the best?
If you only want a coach who does not complain when his pay check does not arrive on time what does that say? Each one of the coaches know the situation they are getting into. So now we have a coach who won’t complain, he may never get paid…
Not a good impression so far.
Useless arrangement. I didn’t know the day would arrive when a South African would be coaching the Zambia national soccer team! Just like i never saw it coming about the age cheating arrangement to score a quick success.
This coach failed to deliver for SA. He was very good at press conferences to explain why, what how, when and so forth…. Club coach yes.
What coach has succeeded with bafana bafana since Clive Baker and the old players like shoes, Khumalo, masinga retired? South Africa brought in high caliber coaches from Brazil and they all failed miserable, so its on the players sometimes not the coach.
Gordon has arguably the best track record when it comes to coaching in the PSL but with regards to the national team, that’s a different beast altogether truth be told. After a long time of arguing why he was not given a shot at coaching Bafana he was finally given the opportunity and it didn’t turn out to be very successful. Even though very successful in his club coaching career I have never been a fan of his type of football tactics. That said I also believe in awarding everyone an opportunity to prove themselves. It is still quite a gamble we have taken appointing a coach who has no experience in qualifying a team to a world cup but just like Herve Renard he might just surprise us.
Big Steve, what sort of tactics does he favour ? Please not defensive like Renard. I would like us to go back to our expressive football, fast wing play, fluid midfielders and the old fashioned centre forward ( Michael Chabal type ). That football was more entertaining and was sweeter when victory was attained. It was dominating and more satisfying. Poulsen when one of the best exponents of this game – big highlight – four nations tournament in sa with our under 23. He gave confidence to our under 23 then to take on a full bafana bafana team.
You are right Pungwa. We need to get back to our old style of play (Champagne Football) even though we failed to win anything major with it but at least it was free flowing, aggressive, precise and very entertaining.George Mungwa and Poulsen knew exactly how to do it.
Gordon Igesund has the best coaching credentials in South African football. His record at club level is second to none. He has taken so many teams especially those with questionable talent to the top – manning rangers, santos, and he almost took a relegation threatened Moroka Swallows to the top a few years ago when they finished second. With the kind of talent Zambia is producing now which is average on a world level he is the perfect coach to harness this questionable talent into a good team. He struggled at Bafana because the players in south africa are not patriotic. Their best football is reserved for clubs sides which is why the soweto derby is the biggest game in the country and not South Africa versus any other national team. Many Zambians do not understand football on a world level. which is why this appointment is being criticised by the uninformed. A typical supporter in Zambia will tell you that Sate Sate is better than Evans Kangwa. When on a world level Sate Sate is a flop. Football has evolved around the would but Zambian football and Zambian football fans have not. Catch-up people.
FAZ’s position now is that they are waiting for Gvt input before they can can finalise personal terms with Igesund. Constitutional court afuma mukapasa ama Ministers, so this situation is likely to drag until after elections, appointment of Cabinet etc. We do not have this time as the coach has to get to work like yesterday. WHAT TO DO : Presido is Patron of FAZ, he needs to be approached quickly so that he can instruct PS Ministry of Sport to sort out the fugures. We cant wait for Cabinet to be appointed !! Ponga do some work !
Sorry, the comment on Faz’s position should read as coming from me. we accidentally typed over the name.

As Zambians prepare to vote in tomorrow’s General Elections (11 August 2016), it’s my prayer and of many people that every citizen will hold the Big National Picture or/and National interest in their heart and mind, both during voting and after results are declared. Here is again another opportunity for Zambians to show themselves and the world beyond that diversity of views, opinion, tribe, ethnicity, language, culture, political affiliation, and more, is a blessing rather than a curse to the nation; that Zambia will continue to be an oasis of peace and tranquility, where every race, language and accent, culture, ethnicity, tribe, and political opinion can be at home and thrive; that ‘ubuntu’ (I am because we are & the intrinsic value of every human being) is not a philosophical discourse but a lived experience. In the next few days, Zambians have an opportunity to show that peace and unity go together and that both are important ingredients in national building. With prayers for peaceful elections. God be with you “Zambia the Real Africa”.
Wise words. My prayers are with all those in Zambia and our families back there. May peace be with everyone. To the young ones, the cadres, don’t let politicians use you with violence. You the future of Zambia and as such, lets treat one another with respect and love. God bless everyone back home.
Last wednesday when I went to the Chelsea vs AC Milan game in Minneapolis Minnesota, I met a Zambia boy by the name of Sydney..he was wearing a chipolopolo jersey, so I talked to him, but stupid me I forgot to ask for his last name so I could look for him on facebook or other social media. I did mention to him that he can find me on Zamfoot, but to my surprise they kid you man in his 20s didn’t what Zamfoot was, so my question is how is Zamfoot advertise this site? Are people back there in Zambia know about Zamfoot? Share your story on how you came to know about Zamfoot. on my part I think I googled Zambia football news and Zamfoot was one of them that popped up, but its been a while since. Point is, much as Zamfoot forget to update the site at times, we need to share with our friends everywhere about this site. The more people on the site, the better. Also Zamfoot, you can generate some cash in advertisement as a lot of people outside Zambia can use resources that you maybe be advertising. Just a suggestion. Make use of the site, just don’t make it annoying as the Ghana site 🙂
Meant to ask…Are MANY people back there in Zambia know about Zamfoot?
Well I’m not quiet sure about back home, few of my friends here in Saskatoon av asked they seem not to know it. I actually found it when I googled in early 2012.
Cool, So you are in the cold weather of Saskatchewan? I wanna drive up north to Alaska to go for vacation and catch some fish…its on my bucket list. Hopefully next summer. I see I would have to drive through your city. How long are you there? For good?
Well I’m not looking forward to Saskatchewan winter, winters here are brutal. I live here let me know when you pass through. which part of Alaska do you wanna visit? You can’t go wrong visiting Alaska anytime between May and September.
I don’t know when I want to go there, my wife wants us to finish visiting other states in the South first. I just love fishing for fun and I though Alaska would be best. I hoping I can convince my family to coming there next year, but they don’t fancy the 56 hours of driving, I prefer driving to flying as I would be able to see more. I was just up there by lake superior last week to see some waterfalls, nothing like the victoria falls though lol.
Here is my unofficial email address, please do send my your names so we can connect in other social media.

Thank you
Zambian players loves/fear white man..sad but true. watch what this coach does with Zambia. As long as he doesn’t pull a Burkhard Ziese nonsense, he will succeed and take us to the next level.
Even if u paint him green igesund is igesund the same old madala whose gud @ givin-excuses tactics. He’s a lesotho, swaziland type of coach and if he was appointed coz he was the cheapest white guy available then we hv set wrong objectives.
Beaumele was possibly the best coach on the list.
Zambia desperately needs energy and enthusiasm.
Will Igesund do that?
Beaumelle was possibly the best coach on the list.

Can’t say much about the Coach but lets give him a chance. H. Renard when he came to Zambia the first time he was a novice, unknown and we were all like who is this guy? Only Kalu gave him a chance and believed in him. The rest now is history. We can’t judge G.I by his past history with Bafana Bafana or his success at club level can’t be used as a yard stick at National level.
Our soccer currently is in shambles and we can’t produce quality players like the bulk of team 2012 or past Chipolopolo which had so much talent even on the bench. That’s the state this new Coach finds our game at. It will take a miracle even if we appointed “The Special One” as a Coach.
The world cup is now beyond our reach. Will NEVER happen WITH this coach .club coaching is quite different from a national team coaching. Let us withdraw from the world cup qualifiers.
we hope everything going to be ok
he is a good coach to take Chipolopolo forward the problem of zambian we talk alot.He can be compared with chicken
big nooo
Igesund is just like any of our local coaches, Zambia and South Africa no difference Kalu was even better coz he wanted the best for chipolopolo nicho umuntu tawama mulifyonse ba Kamanga and your group you’ve failed on this one problem kukonda vochipa good coaches attended the interviews but you went on to pick that crap of a coach shame on you.
Igesund need better materials to work with. More Chipo players are very average
