Fashion Sakala a late substitute as Rangers reach Europa League semifinals

Zambian striker Fashion Sakala Jnr was a late substitute for FC Rangers who managed to progress to the UEFA Europa League.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst decided to go with Kemar Roofe upfront and Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent on the wings meaning Sakala had to make due with a place on the bench.

After a 1-0 defeat in Braga in the first-leg last week, it was a huge night for the Light Blues with a sold-out Ibrox behind them as they looked to overturn the deficit.

James Tavernier was on target less than two minutes into the match and again from the penalty spot late in the first-half as Rangers went in with a 2-0 advantage at the break.

A David Carmo header drew Braga level on aggregate late on to send the match to extra time but Kemar Roofe got the all-important goal to secure Rangers’ place in the last four of the competition.

Sakala came on to replace Roofe at the start of the second half of extra time and nearly got a goal only for the SC Braga defense to block his shot in the dying minutes.

Sakala and Rangers will now face Germany side, RB Leipzig in the semifinals.

RANGERS: McGregor, Tavernier, Goldson, Bassey, Barisic (Balogun, 90), Lundstram, Jack (Kamara, 80), Aribo (Arfield, 105), Ramsey (Wright, 80), Roofe (Fashion Jr, 105), Kent.

Subs: McLaughlin, McCrorie, King, Davis, Sands, Lowry, Amad.
