Zambian midfield ace Enock Mwepu scored the second goal of the match as Redbull Salzburg beat St. Pölten 3-0 away at the NV Arena to progress to the third round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup.
Mwepu started in midfield alongside Zlatko Junuzovic while compatriot Patson Daka led the line alongside Malian striker Sekou Koita.
Salzburg dominated the match from the onset and could have been two-nil up in the first eleven minutes but both Koita and Dominik Szoboszlai failed to make use of their chances. Salzburg was nearly punished but Jerome Onguéné managed to make a clearance on the line.
Salzburg finally took the lead in the 22nd minute after defender Albert Vallci slotted home a Szoboszlai cross from close range to put the visitors 1-0 up. Daka had two good chances, One before halftime and the other a few minutes after the restart, First, he was denied by the post, His second chance he sent his shot wide.
Mwepu made it 2-0 with a beautiful small chip in the 77th minute after a good interchange of passes between captain Andreas Ulmer and Szoboszlai to set up the Zambian for his second goal in the competition.
Andrea Ramalho headed in a Szoboszlai corner to seal a 3-0 win and send Salzburg into the round of 16. Mwepu was withdrawn in the 88th minute and replaced by Majid Ashmeru while Patson Daka put in a full shift.
Next for Salzburg is a Champions League group stage encounter against Lokomotiv Moskva of Russia on Wednesday.
