Derby demands heart as Nkana ready for big test against Power Dynamos

Nkana assistant coach Josphat Nkhoma believes his side is ready to rise to the occasion during Saturday’s Kitwe derby against Power Dynamos billed for Levy Mwanawasa stadium in Ndola.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference held at the MTN service centre in Kitwe ahead of the clash, Nkhoma described the derby as a unique fixture that goes beyond a typical league match, capturing the attention of fans not only in Kitwe but across the country.

“Derby games are different; it’s a different feeling and a different occasion. Everyone is waiting to see who will carry the day,” Nkhoma said.

Nkana head into the encounter having worked through a challenging run of results, while their rivals sit top of the MTN Super League standings.

“They (Power Dynamos) are the best team right now. They have worked hard for it and they deserve to be where they are. But for us, we have been through a difficult patch. What matters now is how we respond and where we finish on the table,” he explained.

Despite the contrast in league positions, the assistant coach remains confident in the team’s preparation and mindset heading into the match.

“We started training on Monday and I think we are ready. The players know what this game means and we are prepared. It’s now about how they express themselves on the pitch,” Nkhoma said.

The last meeting between the two sides at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw on 8 November, 2025, with Lazarous Kambole scoring for Kalampa before Dynamos responded later in the match.

“In a derby, it’s not always about form. It’s about heart; those with a big heart will carry the day,” Nkhoma concluded.
