Chikola optimistic of World Cup qualification

Spain based winger Peter ‘Evra’ Chikola is confident the Zambia U-20 national team will fight hard to meet their target of qualifying to the World Cup.

Chikola who joined the squad in Alexandria, Egypt from his base in Spain on Sunday is aware of how tough the group is but believes the team has what it takes to qualify for the World Cup.

“I am very happy to have joined the team. I found the guys are pushing and giving their best.  I think everyone looks ready for the tournament,” Chikola said.

“I am not saying it is an easy group, it is tough, but we will manage to firstly get out of the group and then fight for our target for world cup qualification.”

The former Kafue Celtic midfielder warned his colleagues against complacency as they were carrying the hopes of the nation.

“We should not be reluctant as if we have just come to play football because we are representing the whole country,” he said.

Chikola immediately went to work, joining training just hours after arriving.

Zambia is camped at Tolip Family Club in Alexandria and will open its account on Tuesday against Benin at the historic Alexandria Stadium.

The Young Chipolopolo will face the Gambia three days later. In the final Group C match Zambia will tackle Tunisia at the Cairo International Stadium.

Top two teams across the three groups will qualify to the quarterfinals with the eventual semi-finalists qualifying to the FIFA World Cup billed for Indonesia.
