Captain Fantastic ! Grace Chanda the Copper Queens hero

Zambia skipper Grace Chanda was named the Woman of the Match after the Copper Queens defeated debutants Togo 4-1 on Saturday at the ongoing TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The forward, who turned 25 last month, netted twice to inspire Zambia to their third ever win at the continental showpiece in three editions – 2014, 2018 and 2022.

“Winning tonight is a huge result for us because it means that we finish the group stages top of the group and this gives us confidence to go into the next round on a high note,” Chanda said at the end of the game.

“These are big goals in my career. They mean so much to me and the team and I want to thank my teammates with whom we have been working hard to get to this level. It is a blessing and we are enjoying every minute that we are here.”

This brings to three the goals Chanda has scored in her WAFCON chapter – one being at the 2018 edition and she is eyeing for more goals going forward.

“We have greatly improved from the way we played in 2018. We are really playing well at this tournament. Now, we want to go to the World Cup. We are one game away from that. I have played at the World Cup at U17 level but now, I want to do it with the senior national team.”

Chanda was part of the Zambia side that featured at the 2014 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup scoring in a 2-1 win over the hosts with the other goal being an own goal by Maria Araya.
