CAF CC: Green Eagles eliminated after playing Cotonsport under protest

Cotonsport 1-0 Green Eagles (Gueme Araina 4′) Aggregate (3-0)

Zambia’s representatives in the 2020/21 CAF Confederations Cup Green Eagles were this evening beaten 1 – 0 by Cotonsport of Cameroon to bow out in the first round of the tournament on a 3 – 0 aggregate score line.

The Choma based side played the match under protest after four players were declared ineligible to play after testing positive for COVID-19, the results of which were only received by the team an hour before kick-off. Allan Chibwe, Boston Muchindu, Anos Tembo and Alex Mwamba were the players affected.

Aggrey Chiyangi still fielded a strong team to try to off-set the two goal deficit after losing by two goals in Lusaka.

Hopes of pulling off a come back were dashed early in the game after the hosts took the lead in the 4th minute. The Cotonsport left winger was allowed to cross from the ball into the box and despite having numbers at the back, Gueme Araina arriving in the box from the right was allowed to take a first time shot in the box unchallenged for the only goal of the game.

From then on, the task seemed insurmountable especially with Eagles doing very little in the final third to trouble the Cameroonians.

Despite close efforts from Amity Shamenda, Hosea Silwimba and Gozon Mutale, Eagles failed to register a shot on target in the second half and their best efforts were in defense were Warren Kunda was outstanding.

Eagles have now gone six games without a win in all competitions and they end a poor campaign in Africa which saw them only manage one win (2-1) over Musongoti of Burundi.
