Green Buffaloes Women’s Football Club successfully defended the FAZ Women’s Super Division on Sunday afternoon following a 2-0 win over ZISD Women.
Heading into the match, the Zambia army sponsored outfit needed just a point to seal the 2023/2024 FAZ Women’s Super Division title with ZESCO Ndola Girls looking to dethrone them.
Maweta Chilenga put the hosts in the lead at Nationalist Stadium just seconds into the match with a close range finish off a Kabange Mupopo beautifully timed cross in a move started by Malawian international Ireen Khumalo.
Kabange Mupopo then forced an own goal from her well taken corner kick to double the lead at the start of the second half as Buffaloes cruised to a well deserved win.
Elsewhere, ZESCO Ndola Girls beat ZANACO Ladies 2-0 with goals from Fridah Kabwe and Avell Chitundu.
The win was not enough to dethrone the Zambia army sponsored outfit as the Ndola based outfit had to settle for second place.
The battle for survival saw three teams go into the final match day with their fate still hanging in the balance.
Luyando Foundation Girls thrashed YASA Queens 4-1 while Kamfisa Police Blue Eagles edged Indeni Roses 1-0 to survive relegation.
National Assembly on the other hand despite recording a vital 1-0 win away in North Western, it was not enough and joined Queens Academy, Chipata Girls and Kabwe Celtic Queens as the relegated teams.
Maylan Mulenga finished the season as the top goalscorer with 25 goals despite not scoring on the final day.
Green Eagles’ Rachel Moono, ZESCO Ndola Girls’ Charity Mubanga and ZISD’s Lungowe Namasiku all finished with 24 goals while Avell Chitundu finished with 22 goals.
Green Buffaloes will represent Zambia at the COSAFA Women’s Champions League qualifier for a chance to qualify to the CAF Women’s Champions League.
