Newly signed Chippa United attacker Augustine Mulenga believes that they must still give Kaizer Chiefs the respect they deserve despite their head coach Morgan Mamilla having appeared to be overly confident about the chances of beating them.
Mulenga was speaking ahead of their opening 2023/2024 Dstv Premiership campaign against Amakhosi tomorrow at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban.
The Zambian international knows too well about Chiefs, having faced them during his previous spells at Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu.
“Yes, I do but you know sometimes a record breaks but what I can say is that come Sunday, we are going to do our best out there. Even Chiefs where they are, they are like Chippa always beats us. So, even them they are gonna come to us and we are gonna show them that we are here,” Mulenga said.
“We are gonna show them also how ready we are and try to compete for each and every ball and at the end of the game I’m sure the results will tell but our focus is to get the maximum points so we can start the league on a good note.”
Chiefs have won three and lost two of their last five meetings with Chippa United and that last loss was against Mammila.
A total of 14 goals and 25 assists in 81 matches in the Dstv Premiership for his previous clubs, is a good return for Mulenga in the PSL. When he was still at Pirates, he was hugely influential in the first two wins in the Soweto Derby and knows the pressure that comes with playing the country’s biggest club in terms of support base.
“What I can is that I know Chiefs and I’m sure the game we are gonna have on Sunday is gonna be a different ball game. We just have to prepare ourselves adequately and try to fight and get the results that we want.
I’m sure it won’t be an easy game but we are gonna work hard and show that we’ve been working for the past five/six weeks back. I’m sure on Sunday, we’ll give our best out there.”
