MTN Super League side Kabwe Warriors took just 2 hours apart to announce the appointment of Chris ‘Mr Takatiko’ Kaunda as new coach after sacking Ian Bakala.
Warriors Chairman Hayden Dingwall also announced that former Lusaka Dynamos assistant coach Josphat Nkhoma will be assist Kaunda.
“Today the Executive has decided to make some changes to the Technical Bench. We have brought in Chris Kaunda and Josphat Nkhoma,” Dingwall said.
“Chris comes with huge experience, he did very well at Zanaco and I think he comes with the experience that the club needs,” the former Warriors’ team manager added.
It’s been a an on and off rollercoster for Bakala at Godfrey ‘Ucar’ Chitalu Stadium having switched from Lusaka Dynamos last season.
Due to lack CAF B licence, Warriors were forced to re-hire Levy ‘Chabby’ Chabala as Bakala was relegated to an assistant role during continental games.
Immediately after Warriors were eliminated from Africa, Chabala was shown the exit door with Bakala reclaiming the head coach.
After failing to qualify for ABSA Cup, the club have decided to appoint Kaunda.
Alongside Kalusha Bwalya and Honour Janza, Kaunda attained his UEFA B licence in Netherland.
Kaunda has had stints at Nkwazi and Zanaco. And his first match in-charge will be a home tie against Indeni this Saturday.
He had a brief spell at Lusaka Dynamos earlier this season.
Warriors are currently 10th on the log on 23 points, 7 behind leaders Green Buffaloes.
The team last won the title in 1987 and that was the 5th.
The Njanji-ni-Njanji fame won four league titles between 1967 and 1972 during the days of Godfrey ‘Ucar’ Chitalu.
Warriors’ last piece of silverware was in 2007 led by little known Henry Banda and then 17 year old Emmanuel Mayuka when they won their third Bp top 8 trophy in 5 years (2002, 2003, 2005, 2007)
